Smuggler Leads Border Patrol and Multiple Agencies on Pursuit

Smuggler Leads Border Patrol and Multiple Agencies on Pursuit

    Release Date: May 19, 2020

LAREDO, TEXAS – A brazen human smuggler led multiple agencies on a lengthy pursuit that began on Mines Road, northwest of Laredo.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of May 15, when agents assigned to the Laredo North Station (LRN) attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on a white pickup truck traveling south on Mines Road near Las Tiendas Road.

The pickup truck failed to yield and a pursuit ensued. The agents turned over the pursuit to
U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP)Air and Marine Operations (AMO) who continued visual contact of the vehicle from the air as it traveled southbound onto Loop 20.

AMO agents relayed the vehicle’s location to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers who located the vehicle and attempted another vehicle stop. Again, the pickup truck failed to yield and led DPS troopers on a pursuit.

After a lengthy pursuit, the vehicle came to a stop under the World Trade Bridge.

Multiple individuals bailed from the vehicle and attempted to abscond across the river to Mexico.

LRN agents and DPS troopers were able to apprehend six individuals, all of whom were determined to be illegally within the United States. One of the six was in need of medical attention and was treated on scene by a Border Patrol EMT prior to being transported to Doctor’s Hospital for further treatment. They were all held in Border Patrol custody pending further investigation.

The driver of the vehicle and six others were observed by AMO agents as they absconded into Mexico.

Human smugglers repeatedly show their lack of concern and regard for public safety. Border Patrol agents continue their vigilance in keeping our community and our nation safe. They remain steadfast in preventing the flow of illegal immigration and exploitation by human smugglers.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP is charged with securing the borders of the United States while enforcing hundreds of laws and facilitating lawful trade and travel.
