California Pols ‘Reprehensible, Says Father of Illegal Immigrant’s Victim
Liberal-turned-citizen activist blasts Xavier Becerra, the Golden State's attorney general, and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf for their heartless 'sanctuary city' stance

A California man whose son died at the hands of the an illegal immigrant blasted his state’s attorney general Thursday over hardcore “sanctuary” policies.
Don Rosenberg, who works for the group Fight Sanctuary Cities, said on “The Laura Ingraham Show” that he is disgusted by the defiance of figures like California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who famously issued a public warning that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were preparing a raid in the city across the bay from San Francisco.
“I find it reprehensible,” he said. “They ignore, not just me, but all of the victims. And they come out here to protest someone who’s trying to protect us. The amazing thing is they just ignore that anything has ever happened to us at all. They don’t want to acknowledge it.”
Rosenberg, a self-described lifelong liberal, joined the fight against sanctuary jurisdictions after his 25-year-old son, Drew, died when his motorcycle collided with a Honduran driver who had entered the country illegally.
Rosenberg challenged one of the favorite talking points of sanctuary city proponents — that refusing to cooperate with ICE builds trust in immigrant communities and encourages migrants to report crimes.
“They’ve never provided any evidence whatsoever that these people are calling in crimes, and they’re solving — they don’t even know when they call in a crime whether they’re here legally, illegally or a citizen,” he said. “Nobody asks that question.”
Rosenberg cited 2016 data indicating that 52,000 illegal immigrants were imprisoned in the California penal system.
“Now, if you’re telling me they’re there because people have called in, wonderful,” he said. “But why are you then protecting them when they get out and putting them back into the community? How can that possibly increase public safety?”
Rosenberg added: “We have to give informant status to 11 million people in this country to play safe?”
He said Becerra is “very slick” and has no regard for the peace and safety of American citizens.
“You’re supposed to follow the law,” he said. “That’s your job. And they don’t want to do it.”
Rosenberg said he believes California politicians are not even interested in the immigrant community — only votes.
“This has nothing to do with protecting illegal aliens,” he said. “This has everything to do with votes and power. Most of these people couldn’t care less about these people … They don’t care what happens to citizens, my son and, you know, thousands of others who have been killed and the millions, literally millions, who have been crime victims — just collateral damage.”
