Canada’s border officials detain record number of Mexicans

Canada’s border officials detain record number of Mexicans

    March 17, 2017 | 8:32pm

Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers arrest an asylum claimant and her two daughters after crossing
the border into Canada from the United States.

Canada’s border authorities detained more Mexicans in the first 67 days of 2017 than they did annually in any of the three previous years, according to statistics obtained by Reuters.
The spike comes immediately after Canada’s federal government lifted its visa requirement for Mexican citizens in December.

Many Mexicans looking north have shifted their focus from the United States to Canada as President Donald Trump vows to crack down on America’s undocumented immigrants, about half of whom are Mexican. On Friday, Reuters reported, immigration judges were reassigned to 12 U.S. cities to speed up deportation.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said it detained 444 Mexican nationals between Jan. 1 and March 8, compared with 410 for all of 2016, 351 for 2015, and 399 for 2014.

The CBSA can detain foreign nationals if it is believed they pose a danger to the public, if their identity is unclear or if they are deemed unlikely to appear for removal or for a proceeding.

The number of Mexicans turned back at the airport has risen, too – to 313 in January, more than any January since 2012 and more than the annual totals for 2012, 2013 and 2014.

With the visa requirement lifted, all that Mexicans need to come to Canada is an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), obtainable online in a matter of minutes. But they cannot work without a work permit, and the eTA does not guarantee entry.

Canada issued 72,450 travel authorizations to Mexican citizens between Dec. 1, 2016, and March 10, 2017 – a significant increase compared with a similar period when visas were required.

Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Minister Ahmed Hussen has said his department is monitoring the situation. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon.

They are looking for a new country to invade and freeload off of, Canada will not take them as if they do not work which they are not authorized to do they will not be allowed in. Canada has very strict requirements for entry even more than ours. Good luck to them immigrants as most of them are low or no skilled and will be public charges if they let them in.

Canada sees major uptick in Mexican immigration

More Mexican nationals attempted to enter Canada in the first 67 days of 2017 than in any of the three previous years, according to a report published Friday evening.

The Canada Border Services Agency detained 444 Mexicans from Jan. 1 to March 8. In 2016, the country detained a total of 410 people, while in 2015 that number was 351 and in 2014 it was 399.

The dramatic upshift comes after Canada's federal government rescinded its requirement that Mexican citizens have a visa to enter the country. Now, any Mexican citizen who wishes to enter Canada can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization, which is attainable online. Canada issued more than 72,000 of these authorizations to Mexicans from Dec. 1 to March 10.

The number of Mexicans who were apprehended at airports while trying to enter Canada in January also surpassed the total number of those taken into custody during each year from 2012 to 2014.

While it's unclear why Mexicans in the U.S. were passing over the U.S. and to its northern neighbor, it could be due to President Trump's executive actions in January, which called for a crackdown on illegal aliens, including deportation of all who have committed crimes while illegally residing in the country.

"It would be premature to draw conclusions or to speculate on future policy at this point," Camielle Edwards, spokeswoman for Canada's Immigration and Refugee Minister, told Reuters on Friday.

The 444 Mexicans who Canadian law enforcement officers detained were held because they either pose a danger to the public, their identity could not be confirmed, or they are not trusted to show up for removal and court proceedings.
