Canada to Deport Alleged Rwandan Genocide Inciter
Canada to Deport Alleged Rwandan Genocide Inciter
Posted Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 at 12:15 pm
A man accused of helping to instigate the 1994 Rwandan genocide has lost his battle to remain in Canada.
Leon Mugesera had requested a stay on his deportation order but was turned down Wednesday by Canada's Federal Court in Montreal.
Mugesera, a Rwandan Hutu, allegedly helped incite the genocide with a 1992 speech in which he referred to ethnic Tutsis as “cockroaches” and called for their extermination.
Rwandan authorities issued a warrant for his arrest but he fled to Canada, where he lived for the past two decades.
Canadian officials have tried to expel Mugesera since 1995. His lawyers argued that he would be subject to torture or death if he was deported to Rwanda.
He is now set to sent back on Thursday. Rwandan authorities plan to put him on trial for war crimes.
Hutu extremists killed an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates during the 1994 genocide.
