Canadian man sentenced for trying to enter U.S. illegally

John D. Fraser, 54, of Nova Scotia had been living and working illegally in the U.S. for more than 30 years, the U.S. Attorney's Office says.

A Canadian man who had been living and working illegally in the United States for more than 30 years was sentenced Tuesday to time already served in prison – three months and 22 days – and ordered to undergo one year of supervised release after he tried to re-enter the country last year without authorization.

U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. sentenced John D. Fraser, 54, of Nova Scotia in federal court in Bangor. Fraser also goes by the alias John Knight.

Court records show that Fraser tried to re-enter the U.S. in Calais on Nov. 20, 2016. At the time, Fraser was a passenger in a vehicle with Florida license plates.

Fraser told the border patrol agent that he was traveling to his winter home in Port St. Lucie, Florida, but after being questioned by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, it was determined that he was trying to enter the country illegally.

A fingerprint check revealed that Fraser had compiled a “significant criminal history” under the name John D. Fraser and had been living in the U.S. illegally for more than 30 years, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maine. Fraser had been ordered to leave the country in 2010.
