Chinese-Made SpongeBob SquarePants Address Books Recalled Over Lead Fears

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,294166,00.html

WASHINGTON — An Ohio importer recalled nearly 250,000 SpongeBob SquarePants address books and journals manufactured in China because the bindings might contain hazardous levels of lead paint, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

Martin Designs Inc. notified the agency that tests of the metal spiral bindings turned up lead content above the level considered safe for children, the CPSC said. Under regulations, children's products found to have more than .06 percent lead accessible to users are subject to a recall.

Children who ingest lead-laced paint can suffer brain damage. The company said it has received no reports of injury.

The recall involves address books and journals sold in retail stores nationwide from June 2006 through July 2007. They have a black metal spiral binding and depict the SpongeBob SquarePants character in various outfits on the front cover.

The recalled address books' UPC code, printed on the back cover, is 80773007505; the recalled journals have the UPC codes 80773002260, 80773075501 and 80773007551.

Consumers should dispose of the product and return the UPC code for a full refund to Martin Designs, Attention: Product Recall, 605 Westlake Dr., Ashland OH 44805.

For more information, consumers can call the company at 1-866-898-0261 or visit its Web site.

    More Recalls

US recalls 300,000 more Chinese toys
    August 23, 2007 - 7:06AM

    http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/wo ... 87009.html

WASHINGTON - Two US toy companies on Wednesday recalled more than 300,000 Chinese-made toys, saying they contained potentially dangerous levels of lead.

The alert comes eight days after a massive global recall by US toy giant Mattel Inc., of 18 million toys that were made in China, and is the fourth recall this month of toys imported to the US from China.

The recalled products were 250,000 Sponge Bob spiral address books and journals, 66,000 spinning tops, including some from the popular Thomas the Tank Engine series, and 4,700 pails, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said in separate statements issued jointly with the two companies concerned.

The paint on the metal spiral bindings of the address books and journals, and on the metal handles of the tops and pails "contain excessive levels of lead", the US importers of the toys, Martin Designs of Ohio and Schylling Associates of Massachusetts, said.

The Schylling company had earlier this month recalled 24,000 Chinese-made "Thomas & Friends" spinning tops, warning that they were painted with lead-based paint.

Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, behavioural problems, and, at very high levels, seizures, coma, and even death.

Toy Recall from a CNN segment...

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/studentn ... test#three

AZUZ: He lives in a pineapple under the sea. But a lot of the toys that feature SpongeBob SquarePants are made in China. In fact, the majority of U.S. toy imports are from there. Well a federal commission says some of the most well-known items contain dangerous amounts of lead, and they're being sent back. Christine Romans has more on the Chinese toy recall.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN REPORTER: These products are in violation of federal lead standards. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announcing the recall of 250,000 SpongeBob SquarePants address books and journals. They may have excessive levels of lead paint on their metal bindings These tin pails from Thomas and Friends and Curious George. Paint on the wooden handles contain excessive levels of lead. Also recalled, spinning tops featuring the same characters and thousands of pieces of jewelry: Divine Inspiration charm bracelets and these Toby and Me jewelry sets sold at TJ Maxx and Marshall's.

JULIE VALLESE, CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION: First and foremost, just take it away from your child. A product like that may be at the bottom of the toy box, and so parents really should do inventory on a regular basis of the products that the CPSP recalls.

ROMANS: All of these recalled products were made in China. The Toy Industry Association says of the $22.3 billion in toys sold in the U.S. last year, 80 percent come from China.

LORI WALLACH, PUBLIC CITIZEN: The idea is to make sure that, number one, wherever a product is produced, it's done safely. And number two, if there's an unsafe product, it doesn't get into our market. A recall is a situation of the horse's being out of the barn, the danger already in our homes.

ROMANS: The CPSC has recalled 86 million toys this year, toys that companies have manufactured or imported.

VALLESE: It is their obligation to consumers and the federal government to make sure that the products they are producing, regardless of where they are being manufactured, meet U.S. safety standards.

ROMANS: According to the Centers for Disease Control, there is no acceptable level of lead exposure for children. Lead can lower a child's IQ and cause brain damage. Toy Industry insiders say recalls show their system is working, but keep in mind, the 66 thousand spinning tops recalled today were sold more than five years ago in specialty stores. The SpongeBob books and journals have been on store shelves for a year. Christine Romans, CNN, New York.

    Mattels Recall Page

    http://www.mattel.com/safety/us/

because your children are our children, too

    Dear Fellow Parents,

Many of us at Mattel are parents ourselves. And like you, we know that nothing is more important than the safety of our children. As you may know, Mattel has recently voluntarily recalled some products for two different reasons: impermissible use of lead paint and risks associated with small, high-powered magnets.

We want to ensure that every parent is aware of these issues, returns affected products to us and knows that we have already taken significant actions to further ensure the safety of our toys.

We hope that we don't have to recall any more products, but if we do, we pledge to address the matter promptly and to inform you quickly.

Our long record of safety at Mattel is why we're one of the most trusted names with parents. And it is our sincere hope that the actions we are taking now will maintain that trust in the future.

Thank you for your continued trust.

    Bob Eckert
    Chairman & Chief Executive Officer
    Mattel, Inc.

WHAT WE'RE DOING AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

    Why are these recalls happening?
While we have some of the most rigorous quality and safety testing procedures in the toy industry, no system can be perfect. If mistakes are made, we fix them. If new standards are set, we apply them.

What is Mattel doing to address this situation?
Regarding our manufacturing processes, we immediately strengthened them with a three-point check system. First, we're requiring that only paint from certified suppliers be used, and we're requiring that every single batch of paint at every single vendor be tested. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't get used. Second, we are tightening controls throughout the production process at vendor facilities and increasing unannounced random inspections. Third, we're testing every production run of finished toys to ensure compliance before they reach our customer. We've met with vendors to ensure they understand our tightened procedures and our absolute requirement of strict adherence to them.

What can I do, as a parent, to ensure my child's safety?
We want to ensure that every parent hears about these issues quickly and returns recalled toys to us as soon as possible. With other toys, always read the packaging for age grading and always monitor your child's play. If you have any doubts at all, please check with a pediatrician or other qualified medical professional.

    Will there be more recalls?
We are in the middle of an extremely detailed and wide-ranging investigation. The fact that we were able to identify a specific part of one product as problematic is indicative of how painstaking this analysis is. We hope that we don't have to recall any more products, but if we do, we will address the matter promptly and inform you quickly.

How can I trust that Mattel toys are safe?
Our priority is the safety of the children who play with our toys. Mattel's philosophy is that every employee is responsible for the quality and safety of our products. Mattel has an organization of more than 1,500 people worldwide solely dedicated to the safety, quality and overall integrity of our toys, including more than 400 highly-trained engineers, technicians, auditors and managers who strive to meet the company's safety vision of providing "Quality and Value the World Can Trust." We are working around the clock to improve our system and have already taken significant actions to do so.

I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHY OUR CHILDRENS TOYS BEING MADE IN CHINA INSTEAD OF HERE IN THE US? OH THATS RIGHT YOU WANT TO MAKE MEGA PROFITS OK.... SO KILLING CHILDREN AND POISONING THEM IS OK IN BUSINESS SENSE..... I GUESS A FEW MILLION IS SOME LAW SUITS OK TOO!

This makes me sick!!!! This is a product of Free Trade Agreements and the outsourcing of American jobs and SAFETY in the name of profits!!!
