Baby left behind by illegal immigrants reunited with family

Baby left behind by illegal immigrants reunited with family

LA JOYA — A 6-month-old child who was left in the United States when his parents were deported returned to Mexico with his family this weekend.

Mario Sanchez Ramirez's mother — Andrea Maria Ramirez Valdez, 20 — snuck back into the United States illegally over the weekend to claim her child despite official plans to reunite in Mexico today.

"I think she couldn't wait until Monday," said Miriam Medel Garcia, a spokeswoman for the Mexican consulate in McAllen.
Ramirez and her husband — Mario Agusto Sanchez Soto, 32 — left the child in the care of a family friend in La Joya on March 3, promising to return in five days.

According to police reports, the baby was suffering from dehydration and diarrhea, and the couple was afraid to take him with them as they traveled farther into the country. They were detained and deported by U.S. Border Patrol agents within two days.

When Ramirez and Sanchez never returned, the child's temporary caretaker became worried, setting off a weeklong international search for the parents.

Noticing Mexican media reports about the story, the couple returned to Reynosa and contacted consular officials, who tentatively planned to reunite the family on Monday, Garcia said.

But Ramirez took matters into her own hands and showed up at the La Joya police station Saturday morning.

Officer Joe Cantu, who first handled Mario's case, helped her contact Child Protective Services and the Consulate to arrange a hand-off.

After a string of affidavits and tests to ensure that the child legally belonged to Ramirez, mother and son were reunited.

"Just seeing the child again, she was very emotional," Cantu said. "He recognized her and was smiling and laughing."

Consular officials took the mother and son back across the border and granted Ramirez — a Honduran immigrant who entered Mexico illegally — five days to straighten out her legal residency or leave the country.

U.S. officials said they do not plan to press charges against the woman for re-entering the country illegally on Saturday.

"She did what she had to do to get her baby back and then left," Cantu said. "What can I say?"

Ok this is ridiculous. Since when are we a baby sitter service just because you can't take care of your kid? Maybe the child should have stayed with CPS since it was ABANDONED...This article is confusing in that at first the parents LEFT the child because it suffered from dehydration and diarrhea then it was the parents couldn't be found and it set off a weeks long search for them. Sounds to me like a lot of BS and it's another SOB story about parents being seperated from kids. How nice though that Mexico gave the couple 5 days to starighten things out when we give them years upon years, why doesn't Mexico do the same and give them free food, housing, an education, money for the kid etc.

I understand that she wanted her baby back, but isnt that how she got herself into this problem in the 1st place? She only had to wait until Monday to be reunited with her baby in Mexico. But this woman took it upon herself to BREAK THE LAW AGAIN by sneaking back into the country.

    .

The couple didn't act until reading about media reports of an international search--that is very telling.

The local Mexican consulate should have cared for the baby---don't they 'justify' their presence by saying they are serving the needs of Mexican citizens?

I agree. She can get back in whenever she wants obviously so those 5 days in Mexico is just a vacation until she crosses back over again...

These is much that is troubling about this case.

First, this woman proves these people can cross our borders at will, just as if they were waliking to the corner market for a gallon of milk. That is a disgrace and our government needs to be held accountable.

In addition, this woman was officially deported and then crosses the border again illegally and shows up at a police station to claim a baby! Why wasn't this woman arrested again and prosecuted for illegal re-entry after a formal notice of deportation was excuted!

Instead of arresting this woman, the police jump to her aid and help her get a baby back which arguably, she may not even deserve back.

This woman sure had no fear to re-enter illegally after a order of deportation was executed against her. She only had to wait a few days to get her baby back, but instead she breaks the law again!

I don't want to hear again these people are living in the shadows out of fear! These people are arrogant, bravado filled, and not afraid of any possible legal consequence as a result of their criminal actions.

And this gem from a so called police officer:

    "
She did what she had to do to get her baby back and then left," Cantu said. "What can I say?"
Further evidence that many local police agencies are completely impotent when it comes to the illegal invaders and enforcing this nations law.

Yep, she clearly committed a felony and should be prosecuted. What kind of society are we becoming when our law enforcement officials are allowed to pick and choose the laws they wish to enforce and ignore the ones they don't agree with?
