Pulling US aid to Honduras would fuel, not fight, illegal immigration

President Trump is right to want to stop an illegal immigrant caravan from approaching the U.S. border. But Trump would make a big mistake by following through on his threat on Tuesday and cutting U.S. aid programs in Honduras.

That's because the programs are specifically focused on reducing criminality while providing education and employment opportunities that allow Hondurans to escape from violence but remain in their own country. Gangs in Honduras, including MS-13, possess an almost psychotic penchant for brutality. And so, even as Trump rightly cannot accept illegal immigration, Honduran desperation is rational.

In turn, we should pay heed to the data on U.S. aid programs in Honduras. A 2014 study by Vanderbilt University, for example, found that thanks to U.S. programs, "51 percent fewer residents reported being aware of extortion and blackmail, 51 percent fewer residents reported being aware of murders, 35 percent fewer residents reported avoiding dangerous areas because of fear of crime." Similar programs continue to operate today. Moreover, Vanderbilt also found that U.S. AID's success has naturally conservative undertones: explicitly identifying the need for greater fostering of families, faith institutions, and schools in leading young people away from violence.

These, put simply, are programs that the American people have joined moral and political reason to support. A better way of preventing the kind of caravans we see this week would be to boost these aid programs and clean up the Honduran government. That would cultivate an environment of improved governance that could finally get to grips with Honduras' deep social ills. As for the caravan, why can't the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol simply obstruct its passage onto U.S. soil instead of threatening programs that work well?

I completely disagree with Mr. Rogan. We're not interested in their local knowledge about their own country, our issue is illegal immigration which the 4 year old study doesn't address. There is nothing "moral" about paying countries aid money or even trading with countries who don't respect and honor our national borders and the sovereignty they represent.

Fleecing America has gone on too long. All of the billions we give to dysfunctional countries, full of corruption and citizens who have made few efforts to change their direction.

Instead of throwing money at people, get some bids for whatever is truly needed to help, submit invoices, check them over to spot inflated numbers and theft, get the citizens to be involved in pushing their nations forward. Get other nations to carry the load.

Stop allowing foreign citizens to come to the United States to take from taxpayers and hurt citizens' lives with little if any ability to contribute. The robbery of America needs to end.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Honduas has free college for their citizens. Tell me why we are wasting taxpayer money "aiding" a country that can afford to send its people to college for free when we can't?

PULL THE DAMN PLUG ON THESE MOOCHERS!! They know how to fix their country, they don't need the US to do that, and they sure as hell don't need our money.

We pay U.N. and NATO billions of our money.

No more foreign aid to any country!

Send in the NATO troops and the U.N. to stop these corrupt countries.

It is NOT our responsibility to do so!

We are not the dumping ground or ATM machine for the world.

Send them all back and let the UN and NATO do their damn jobs and go solve the problems on their soil.

    THE END!!!

    Not true.

    Honduras School System

The government of Honduras has a public school system that provides free schooling through the sixth grade. Many of the remote villages we serve will, at best, have a one or two-room schoolhouse and one-two teachers for all six grades. Our experience, however, is that these schools are substandard in every respect: books, supplies, curriculum. Often the teachers go unpaid for months at a time.

When a child graduates from the sixth grade, education stops for most students. Boys usually go to work in the fields with their fathers, or they gravitate to the cities for low paying jobs. Girls typically go home and help raise the children until they marry early and start families of their own. Marriages of girls at age 12-14 are not uncommon.

Education beyond the sixth grade (colegio in Honduras) is considered “private education” as the government does not require or provide education past primary school and these expenses must be paid by the parents. Families from these rural areas cannot afford the costs of this education.

The Honduras Good Works Secondary Education Scholarship Fund requests $275 per school year per student which goes toward books, uniforms, school supplies, school fees, and transportation. Children who live close to a school will receive less, while those who live far away, may receive more, as transportation is the single greatest cost in achieving an education. Our scholarship does not cover the entire cost of going to school. Parents must contribute toward the cost, and we are careful to communicate that an education is not “free”, nor is it “charity.” We believe this shared cost approach ensures parents and students are making a commitment to education, to support the importance of attending classes regularly, studying at home, adhering to the program’s strict behavior criteria, and making the grades to pass to the next grade.

The first three years of colegio are basic courses of science, history, etc; the last two to three years of the program are a student-chosen career track. If one completes a career track in education, the person is qualified to teach in a primary school. Therefore, completing colegio moves one from menial work to professional work.

Education in Honduras is free to the public. The system begins in pre-school, continues in elementary school (1st-9th grade), secondary school (10th or 12th grade), then the university years (licentiate, master and doctorate). The public education in Honduras also coexist with private schools and universities.

This is why I thought it was free through college, that is what it says, right?
