A woman whose son was killed by an illegal immigrant said Monday it will not be easy for lawmakers to fix the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program due to fraud and other issues.

The White House said Monday that the DACA program is "dead" at this point, blaming Democrats for refusing to negotiate a solution.

Mary Ann Mendoza said on "The Story" that DACA is "wrought with fraud" and it's inaccurate to say that all Dreamers are "contributing members of society."

"They are on welfare, food stamps, they get assistance in housing. They get free health care. These are the types of things in this program that need to be looked at," she said, adding that DACA recipients are not removed from the program for misdemeanor crimes.

Mendoza said defense lawyers will then argue with a judge in order to get a felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor so the person does not violate the DACA rules.

"Our politicians need to be looking deep and hard at how to reform [DACA]," she said.

Mendoza's son, Arizona police officer Brandon Mendoza, was killed by a drunk driver with a criminal record who had been in the country illegally for two decades.

Since the country has become "overburdened" with illegal immigrants, Mendoza said the Trump administration should also look to reduce legal immigration.

"Our Congress and senators need to get off their duffs and ... protect us," she argued.
