Carolinians want less rights for illegal immigrants

A new poll shows North Carolinians want more laws restricting the rights of illegal immigrants.

A recent census estimate shows up to 300,000 illegal immigrants live in the state.

The poll was done by the conservative think tank, Civitas. The poll shows that nearly 80-percent believe the state should not give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses.

Nearly 60-percent believe illegal immigrants who commit crimes should be deported.
“This is the result of several sheriff's who say that they repeatedly arrest illegal immigrants for misdemeanor violations and they end up having to turn them loose because there's nothing they can do, Jack Hawke of the Civitas Institute explained.

Illegal immigration is now getting the attention of a North Carolina congresswoman. It stems back to a DWI case not too long ago.

The case involved a Gaston County teacher who was killed by a drunk driver who was an illegal immigrant. That immigrant already had five DWI convictions.

U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick (R-North Carolina) has since introduced federal legislation to deport illegal aliens who commit crimes.

“No more excuses, no more endless appeals, you're drunk, you're driving, you're illegal, you're deported, period, she said.

Ninety-percent of those polled this month believe North Carolina has an illegal immigration problem.

And nearly 80-percent believe companies who hire illegal immigrants should be fined if caught.

Legislators on hand listened closely and say there will likely be several bills taken up next spring on many of these issues.

Eight-hundred registered voters took part in this most recent poll. Participants were required to have voted in the last two elections.

Fifty-two percent of those polled were Democrats and 36-percent were Republican.
