C.B.P. Agents Rescue Abandoned Group Near Tucson

    (Monday, April 20, 2009)

Tucson, Ariz. – Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents and CBP Air and Marine Air Interdiction agents provided needed assistance to individuals abandoned by their smuggler. The latest rescue over the weekend is a continuation of humanitarian efforts by CBP.

On Sunday, a Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue agent received a routed 911 telephone call from the Pima County Sheriff’s Office about a group of suspected illegal aliens in distress on the Tohono Indian Reservation. The group explained they had lit a signal fire.

A CBP Air and Marine helicopter was able to spot the smoke from the air. The helicopter was then able to land and deploy a BORSTAR agent. A total of ten Mexican nationals were found and treated for mild dehydration. All subjects were determined to be illegal aliens and claimed to have been left behind by a smuggler. The subjects were transported to the Tucson Coordination Center for processing.

In fiscal year 2008, agents of the Tucson Sector Border Patrol were responsible for the rescue of more than 460 individuals. Many of those rescued had also stated they had been left behind by smugglers when they were unable to continue walking the pace the smugglers demanded they keep.

To support humanitarian operations like these, more than 50 agents in the Tucson sector have received advanced medical and rescue training and are members of BORSTAR. In addition, 69 agents are State certified Emergency Medical Technicians and are able to triage and administer medical treatment in the field. An additional 20 agents are currently in the process of completing the EMT training program. Tucson Sector remains committed to keeping border safety among our top priorities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

Funny, it's OK to give them advanced training in that, but they want to stop the training to assist ICE. Glad they were there to help them. Just hope processing was sending them back to Mexico....and maybe a nice detailed description of the smuggler who ditched them.

Processing them means finger prints, photo and dna sample before deportation.
