What good does it do for an illegal alien to get a college degree, when they can't legally work in this country, when/if they graduate? It's just money wasted.

In short, Perry has treated illegal immigration as a security issue but steered clear of other anti-immigrant measures. When Arizona enacted its controversial statute, he explicitly rejected that approach for Texas. His statement read:

“Texas has a rich history with Mexico, our largest trading partner, and we share more than 1,200 miles of border, more than any other state.

That's a really accurate article and this one sentence really sums it up.
In short, Perry has treated illegal immigration as a security issue but steered clear of other anti-immigrant measures.
I'm waiting to hear what he has to say about enforcement. Something he hasn't really had to face as gov. of TX, since he could put that off on the fed. gov., like most governors and local officials do.

State legislators have filed at least four bills to repeal the measure, which grants lower, in-state tuition to the children of immigrants
The legislature couldn't get it to his desk, just like the sanctuary bill. I'm very frustrated by my state legislature, they are the bottle neck, especially the senate. Members of the house keep trying and we made a little headway this year. The voter ID bill that goes into effect prior to 2012 election is critical to getting the representatives of the citizens of Texas elected and you have to do that first to get the bills passed. We have to stop what's known as "voting illegal" before we will get any descent immigration legislation passed. Ironically, the voter ID bill was the first step Arizona took, then several years later HB 1070 passed. You have to get legitimate officials elected before you can win the fight against illegal immigration.
