WASHINGTON—U.S. Customs and Border Protection has begun testing an enhanced mobile device to collect biometric data from a limited number of foreign national air travelers departing the United States at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Officers will compare biometrics collected via the handheld device to the biometrics collected when the traveler entered the United States.

“CBP is relentless in its pursuit of new and innovative technology that will assist officers in their efforts to provide national security and efficiently facilitate trade and travel through our nation’s ports of entry,” said Office of Field Operations Assistant Commissioner Todd Owen. “Thorough testing will ensure that we deploy the right technology in a way that enhances security, protects privacy and improves the process.”

During testing, CBP officers will be stationed at the passenger loading bridge of selected flights departing the United States with a handheld biometric device. CBP officers will scan selected foreign national air travelers’ fingerprints and passports using the device. The traveler’s data will be matched to the data collected when they entered the United States and then stored in secure data systems managed by the Department of Homeland Security.

CBP remains committed to protecting the privacy of all travelers.

This project is one of several initiatives CBP is working on to address the Congressional mandate to biometrically record the departure of foreign visitors.

The project will test the feasibility of using an enhanced handheld mobile device to collect biometric exit data from foreign national air travelers and to conduct law enforcement queries that will be used during inspections of foreign national travelers departing the United States. Only non-U.S. citizens will be included in the testing.

Testing will expand to the following locations this fall: Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York, San Francisco, and Washington-Dulles. The project will run through June 2016.

This biometric capability has the potential to enhance existing outbound mobile enforcement teams and ensure the departure of a foreign national traveler from the United States through biometric verification. After the testing, CBP will analyze the information collected and use the results to help determine future plans for biometric exit.

CBP’s Entry/Exit strategy includes three core pillars: identify and close the biographic gaps and enhance the entry-exit system; perform targeted biometric operations; and transform the entry/exit process through the use of emerging biometric technologies.

Currently, CBP relies on biometric screening—digital fingerprints and photos—to secure our borders and ensure that foreign travelers presenting themselves for admission to the United States are who they claim to be.

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

Officials Expand Test of Facial, Eye Scans on Mexican Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection will begin capturing facial and eye scans of foreigners entering the country at San Diego's Otay Mesa port of entry.

People leaving the U.S. at the Otay Mesa pedestrian crossing will be scanned using new biometric screening put into place to help combat the number of people living in the country illegally.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection began capturing facial and eye scans of foreigners in December. Now, foreigners going to Mexico on foot through the checkpoint will also be scanned.

Certain non-residents will undergo face and eye scans to compare their entry record. The new trial begins February 22 and runs until May 2016.

Officials say U.S. citizens will not be asked to provide this on either entry or exit.

The trial run, which lasts through the end of June, will help determine if authorities expand biometric screening to foreigners at all land crossings on the 1,954-mile border with Mexico. Authorities will look at the accuracy of the cameras.

Otay Mesa was the nation's fourth-busiest border crossing last year, with 14.8 million motorists and pedestrians entering the country there from Tijuana, Mexico.

Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Gains US Mobile Passport Support

If you’ve ever flown internationally, then you know how much of a hassle it can be once you get back into the US – or your home country. Especially stressful when you have a connecting flight, and not much time to connect. The United States Customs & Border Patrol have been working to make the process of getting back into the US a bit easier. Not too long ago they started installing the self-service kiosks at airports, making it much easier to get in and through passport control. Recently they’ve started working on US Mobile Passports, allowing you to use your phone to get through Passport control. The app allows you to do your customs declarations and submit your information, so once you land and get to Passport Control you can just breeze right through, it’s not perfect, but it is the future.

US Mobile Passport support is available at a few airports within the US already, and now it’s coming to Dallas-Fort Worth, in Texas. It’s call letters, DFW, is one of the busiest airports in the world, as far as plane traffic goes – sitting behind Chicago’s O’Hare and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Dallas-Fort Worth is mostly busy due to it being the headquarters forAmerican Airlines, and their central hub. Similar to O’Hare for United Airlines and Hartsfield-Jackson for Delta. If you’ve ever gone through passport control at Dallas-Fort Worth, you’ll know just how bad it can be, especially when multiple planes from overseas have landed. This should make things a bit more smoother, however, which is always a great thing.

The app is available in the Play Store now, it’s free of course, and takes just a few minutes to set up. While this should make things faster and smoother, it’s still highly-recommended to keep your passport with you at all times. In case you do get stopped for a random search, or you just need to use your passport. Either way, this way you’ll be all set. One of the cool features in this app is that you can schedule it to send in your information after you’ve landed, or do it before you’ve even deplaned. Which can take a while on planes such as the Boeing 747 or the Airbus A380, both of which carry over 400 passengers, each.
