U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers on Thursday stopped a man from smuggling 1,000 rounds of 7.62 ammunition into Matamoros.

A criminal complaint levied against Eric Hernandez alleges the suspect drove a Kia Optima to the B&M International Bridge on Thursday with 25 boxes of the ammunition concealed under the driver’s seat.

On Friday morning, U.S. Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya III ordered Hernandez held without bond pending a preliminary examination and detention hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, court records show.
