VERACRUZ, Mexico — The governor of the Mexican Gulf state of Veracruz says marines clashed with gunmen trying to establish a base in the area, killing six alleged assailants.

Gov. Javier Duarte confirmed the clash Tuesday on his Twitter account.

A state prosecutor who didn't want to be quoted by name because he is not allowed to discuss the case said four gunmen died in a firefight at a safe house and two others perished when their car crashed and caught fire after fleeing the scene of the clash.

The Red Cross in Veracruz said in a statement that a stray bullet from the gunfight entered a home, hitting a man in the arm.

Veracruz is one of several eastern Mexican states where the Gulf and Zetas drug cartels are fighting for control.
