County begins to enforce new immigration law

The end-of-the-month rush, plus slight delays from new verification requirements, resulted in long lines and a three-hour wait at the tag office Friday.

People who came to Moulton last Friday to renew their automobile tag on the last day of the month had one thing to be thankful for – nice weather.

The state of Alabama’s new illegal immigration law went into effect last Thursday and on Friday, delays associated with the new identification requirements, plus the normal rush associated with the last day of the month, caused a 3-hour wait, and thus long outside lines, at the tag office. But everyone in line was served, ending around 6:30 Friday afternoon.

The new law requires county officials to electronically verify anyone applying for a business license, boat decal, or car tag. People applying for those things must have an Alabama driver’s license or one of 12 other alternate documents (listed below).

Also, both tax assessor Tommy Praytor and Probate Judge Mike Praytor said another important thing the public needs to know is if two people are listed on the car tag or license application, both identifications, or copies, are required.

If one of the people listed on the application is deceased, a death certificate must be provided or the title must be transferred to another name.

County officials are using a computer verification system called “AL Verifyâ€
