The Goliad chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps of Texas will not conduct activities in this area as part of a major border observation event scheduled for October.

"There won't be anything here in the Goliad area specifically other than what we do just on a daily basis," said Kenneth Buelter, chapter president. Those daily activities amount to the vigilance maintained by any neighborhood watch, he said.

In October, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps of Texas plans to conduct a massive border observation effort along the U.S.-Mexico border, said Al Garza, president of the organization.

Former Texas and Goliad chapter president Bill Parmley said in a July interview that the group would conduct observation activities mostly on private land stretching from Port Lavaca, through Victoria, on to Goliad, then follow U.S. Highway 59 to a point near Laredo.

The 25 members of the Goliad chapter will still participate in the October event, Buelter said, but just not in this area.

"They will be headed to South Texas probably to Falfurrias and the Hebbronville area," Buelter said.

The situation in Goliad County, and specifically in the Sarco area, has been greatly improving thanks to vigilance by residents and good work by law enforcement, he said.

Previously residents of the area reported illegal immigrants regularly damaged property while crossing private land to avoid detection by law enforcement.

"Yeah, it's still happening from time to time, but it's not to the extent that it was earlier this year," Buelter said.
