One million immigrants seek US citizenship to vote: campaign

One million immigrants seek US citizenship to vote: campaigners
    Published: Monday January 7, 2008

A record one million immigrants sought US citizenship last year so they could vote in the 2008 presidential election, overwhelming the processing offices, Hispanic groups said on Monday.

"Surpassing the goal of one million applications is a tremendous achievement," said Arturo Vargas, head of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).

Immigrants from Latin America represent the biggest ethnic minority in the United States -- some 45 million people. They could wield decisive weight in November's election, especially in largely Hispanic states such as Florida, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado.

NALEO is one of several groups running a campaign to mobilize the Hispanic vote with the early presidential nominating contests underway and immigration a hot topic.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services received 1.029 million applications for citizenship from immigrants between January and October 2007, the organizations say, citing official figures.

The figure -- a 10-year record, and twice the number for the previous year -- overwhelmed the offices processing the claims, causing a backlog.

The USCIS said in November it could not process all the applications at the normal speed.

"Our campaign is committed to building the support we need to clear this backlog," said Cecilia Munoz, vice-president of the biggest Hispanic group, the National Council of La Raza.

"They deserve the opportunity to have their voices heard on election day."

And if they have spent one minute in this country illegally, then they don't deserve citizenship. Get out and go to the back of the line cheaters!

They better not clear that back log by hurrying the process or overlooking thorough background checks on every one of those people.

They did it once and it was a huge mistake.

I believe I read that a very large number turned in their application that last couple days before the cost went up. I will look for the article.

A record one million immigrants sought US citizenship last year
How do they know they were 'immigrants' or not?

What exactly does this mean - were they persons here on work visas that decided to pursue the citizenship/PR path?

...Yes, I'm holding the most obvious point folks here will think of for last - yep, probably the worst case is the most plausible case - maybe, just maybe, they were illegal aliens that decided they didn't want to get caught up in the increased enforcement action by local/state/ICE agencies, and suddenly decided that their presence here should at least give the guise of being about something other than pure economic benefits.....???

For the record, voting in Federal elections requires US citizenship.
Voting at the state/local levels is a much 'fuzzier' proposition - as ID requirements vary greatly.

I am highly suspicious those Mobile Consulates run by Mexico are running "illegal voter registration". These mobile consulates operate on American soil and should be illegal under embassy and consulate rules.

Mexican government needs to quit interferring with our domestic policies and election process. The consulate and La Raza will advise hispanics who to vote for.

No government can help the destinies of people who insist in putting sectional and class consciousness ahead of general weal.

A brief explanation of some of my objections to the invasion--
I am an avid reader of news and blogs--I am retired and have the time. I subscribe to the words posted by others that a great deal of these people are not here to be assimilated. They are here to take what they can get from us. I do not blame them. I blame the employers who violate our Federal laws.
Next and very important--my heritage is Italian-- I do not try, nor did my grandparents or my parents to change the USA to Italy. It seems that if your name ends in a z, for example, that you must take up the sword to slash the rule of law to allow more people of your ethnic heritage to steal into this country and give them free everything.
Here is the major part of the problem I cited. The numbers of Hispanic citizens represent the largest single group of ethnic or racial groups in this country. The immigration laws have, for years , attempted to balance the number of immigrants to maintain the "melting pot" and to avoid multiculturism. I do not understand the lack of loyalty to America on the part of a large number of Hispanic citizens. They care more for their ethnicity than they do for this country. These people who are here illegally will vote--yes they will--not under their own names --but they will vote. They will make very effort to make this country more like their countries. I have been there. I do not want that.
There is an assimilation rate. I do not know what it is, but I do feel that we are well past it.

Welcome to ALIPAC, misterbill. I do agree there is an assimilation rate, and that is in keeping with the quota established by our government. People who just walk across the border distort this balance that you speak of.

They're sort of like distant relatives who come...and stay...and stay

I am griped by their demands for "equality." I heard one guy speaking at a pro-illegal rally, and he must have had some coaching because his rhetoric seemed straight out of the sixties civil rights movement. Since when are these self-invited, illegal border crossers entitled to equality? In this country convicts and ex-convicts are denied quite a few rights, by law. I know everyone is innocent until proven guilty--but I can't help but wonder if those who willfully enter our country illegally actually are covered by constitutional protections. If I saw a team of Chinese commandos, even if they were not in uniform, I would have to do something. Where do you draw the line? By law, they have already committed serious offenses, and the border crossing is only part of it.

I'd rather they were after money than after the vote.

This is why we need enforcement and we need it now.

Imagine what a million voters in this country could do? Decide a Presidental election, a gubernatorial election, any local elections.

Voting in federal or state elections merely requires that a proxy registrar signs the registration list, swearing that all applicants have the appropriate driver's license or other picture ID. There are no Social Security numbers on the list. No one validates submitted registration lists, no one checks immigration status, no one checks other states for duplicate registrations, no one validates IDs, no one removes felons from the list, etc.. It is all up to the proxy registrar; if he or she approves the applicant, the applicant gets a voter registration card.

If the animal shelter manager is a proxy registrar, he can register every dog and cat, have the registration cards sent to the shelter as a residence, and make any number of votes he wants. Nursing homes are a bit trickier for harvesting voter registration cards. One may only hope that the cemetery manager is not a proxy registrar.

It's all done by the honor system. Remember when honor was a given among candidates for public office?
One man's terrorist is another man's undocumented worker.

Unless we enforce laws against illegal aliens today,
tomorrow WE may wake up as illegals.

The last word: illegal aliens are ILLEGAL!

    Welcome, misterbill!!!

I couldn't agree with you more! We have more than exceeded critical mass and therein lies the problem. We used to have a quota of 200,000 but that wasn't enough for the corporate thieves. Toss in the anchor baby scam, the millions of illegals...and we ARE Mexico! This was the plan! The Reconquistas have been telling us that they would take over the US by populating this country! But no one was listening.

Yes... they will vote! I'm hearing stories about illegals registering for absentee ballots several times under different names...no ID required in the barrios. Then they simply put a stamp on it and, voila! There is no way the County Registrars are going to sit down and check every ballot for fraud! Many illegals have DL's and SSN's with multiple names.

Also, there is an army of the LaRaza's and Mechistas out here in CA who are actively soliciting the illegals and going door to door to get them to register! Many of the canvassers are illegal themselves! And they are being paid for everyone they register!

This election will definitely be skewed! We no longer have a democratic system...we will become as corrupt as our southern neighbors.
