Chambliss wants work visas for immigrants

January 12, 2006

Moultrie -- Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants live and work right here in South Georgia. They're a financial burden on the system, but they also serve a vital role as laborers on many South Georgia farms.

In the ongoing dilemma over how to handle this growing problems, U. S. Senator Saxby Chambliss plans to propose an agriculture work visa program for illegals.

Chambliss says the migrant workers, most of whom are here illegally, are important to South Georgia processing plants. "Our farmers need the availability of those processing plants to survive. They also need farm labor to survive. So I'm working on a program and a bill that's going to allow that to happen. They will not become citizens as a result of being here illegally."

Senator Chambliss says the key to dealing with the growing illegal immigrant problem is to seal the U. S. borders. He says the Senate will debate a massive immigration reform bill next month.
