US Border Patrol Stations Experiencing Overflow

MCALLEN - The number of people crossing the border illegally through the Rio Grande Valley is surging once again.
U.S. Border patrol stations are scrambling to find places for people and the McAllen bus station is overflowing with them.

It’s easy to spot the people who crossed the border illegally in the crowds at the bus station. The adults have ankle bracelets, plastic bags with GPS chargers and immigration court paperwork. Most of them also have children in tow.

U.S. Border Patrol has not responded to our questions on the subject, so CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar.

“Those Border Patrol stations, which are not the place to keep them, are starting to get overloaded,” he said.

Cuellar said it’s not just Central Americans surging across the border. He said they’re Chinese, Indian, Nepalese and Middle Eastern.

“So people are starting to use the southern border to claim asylum, political refuge and other reasons to come in and use the legal system against us,” he said. “We’re backlogged half a million people waiting three, four, five years before they get a court hearing.”

Cuellar said 55 new immigration judges were added in 2015. He hopes 25 more will be added this year. If people continue crossing the border at an increasing rate, he said even that won’t be enough.

Congress allotted $750 million dollars to send to Central America in 2015. The money would be used to address the root of the surge of people leaving those countries.

Cuellar said as of last week, only $23 million dollars have used to that purpose.
