More than 100 Chinese nationals involved in internet phone call scams were deported through Siem Reap airport yesterday.
Uk Heisela, director of the investigations at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department, said Chinese police hired two aeroplanes to send the 122 Chinese who committed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) scams back to China.
“We have cooperated with Chinese police to deport them after we found out they are involved in VoIP crimes,” he said.
Mr Heisela said only 21 of the nationals had passports, and the rest were living illegally in Cambodia.
The deportation followed the raids of two guesthouses in Poipet city earlier this month.
Anti-terrorism police also arrested more than 300 Chinese nationals in a single Tuol Kork district apartment block over the weekend on suspicion of VoIP scams.
In recent years, Cambodia has deported more than 600 Chinese and Taiwanese arrested on suspicion of telecoms scams.
