City adopts resolution to keep Minutemen out

    David Crowder
    El Paso Times

Stepping into the border fray over the Minutemen, the El Paso City Council adopted a resolution inviting them to stay out of town.

East-Central city Rep. José Alexandro Lozano cast the sole vote against the measure, saying he has spent time with them in Arizona.

"If the law allows them to do their thing, let it be," Lozano said. "We should totally find a way of closing our borders, not only for the sake of illegal immigration, but also for the sake of lives."

The resolution, drafted by city Reps. Steve Ortega and Beto O'Rourke, was strongly supported by seven city representatives.

It asserted that the El Paso area's economic future depends on "a spirit of cooperation and good will," and that El Paso officials support law enforcement officers in enforcing the rule of law and "reject civilian attempts to enforce immigration law."

Speaking against the resolution, Central El Pasoan Sal Gomez said, "My opinion about the Minutemen is a violation of any law, in this case federal law, must be confronted with a consequence, not a reward. Our country is being invaded on a massive scale by illegal immigration. Face it, it is the truth."

A representative of the American Civil Liberties Union who just moved to El Paso from Arizona, Ray Ybarra, urged support for the measure, saying the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers represent "a message of hatred and intolerance."

"The militarization of the border has led to more than 3,500 deaths, and the solution is not to try what has already failed," he said.

Later, Texas' Minutemen director Shannon McCauley said the city's resolution "doesn't mean anything to me or any American who wants secure borders."

"We're going to come down there and secure the border and cost the drug cartel and the human smuggler organizations as much as we can in the month of October."

Adopting a resolution? Spare me. All Americans, including the Minutemen have the right to assemble and express themselves. It's called free speech and I think it's one of them Amendment thingies.

Maybe they should if they want to adopt any messure, maybe adopt a Messure to ban the ACLU. Now that would be a step in the right direction.

GOOD JOB, SHANNON MCCAULEY AND MINUTEMEN
What in the heck will they be able to do about it, because you know if they threaten to arrest them there will be so many more Americans who flock to El Paso to support them. What are they going to do? Put thousands of Americans in jail on El Paso, Texas!!! If that wouldn't say it all, I don't know what would What incredible nerve Oh, thank you very much, Mr. Bush. You were almost successful at your goal in parts of Texas. Too bad you forgot about the millions of fellow Americans Texans have around the country. You go, Shannon MCCauley, we'll be right behind you!!

And another thing Mr. Ortega and O'Rourke, those borders belong to the people of this country because they effect us all. Too bad El Paso's economic future will be bleak for a while. The U.S. can't allow an invasion just for El Paso. Remember it's the UNITED States of America, not the States of America. Try enticing a few Americans to El Paso, somehow you'll recover.

And if you don't like that, then MOVE. How many American's have had to relocate as a result of illegal Immigration and crime running them out of their neighborhoods and communities!! Start packin boys, and please take the south road.

Really? The border's been militarized? Then why are the Minutemen heading there? I thought that they were there in absence of the military until they were deployed.

I think what's led to 3,500 deaths are the idiots in this country like the ACLU waving to the criminal aliens to come on across one of the most forbidding deserts on Earth, not the Minutemen.

Let them draft all the resolutions they want. I don't think that the ACLU or El Paso are looking for any "solutions" to this problem, so it may as well be the Minutemen.

I can tell you firsthand from being stationed there in the Army that drug cartels control that entire city. En otros palabras, keep up the good work, Minutemen
