Illegal immigration presents a serious "Gordian knot" issue for New Jersey. The federal government has failed miserably, so many states and even local governments have picked up the gauntlet. But, their hodgepodge efforts tend to be predictably fueled by ideology or demagoguery.

New Jersey needs to deploy a "carrot-on-a-stick" rather than a "hack it to pieces" legislative approach. Increasing anecdotal evidence suggests that exploitation of illegal immigrant laborers is rapidly becoming the 21st century equivalent of slavery. Legal protections

Whether "day laborers" are illegal immigrants or "under the table" indigent workers, they cannot avail themselves of work-related legal protections nor pay for their own human service needs.

Unscrupulous businesses and contractors undermine the American economy for the sake of profit maximization. They are empowering illegal workers to take work that would normally go to legitimate contractors who are paying employment and income taxes.

The New Jersey Legislature must reform the state's role in the enforcement of federal immigration laws by embracing a dual approach of granting earned amnesty for noncriminal, "nuclear family" immigrants, while enacting legislative reforms that empower local jurisdictions to rigorously enforce federal immigration laws.

How can state government justify making New Jersey residents endure a bureaucratic grist mill to get their driver's licenses, yet not require similar proofs for immigration purposes? State troopers and local law enforcement officers throughout the state should be empowered to administer and enforce federal immigration laws in accordance with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security 287G program. Mandatory

New Jersey's digital driver's license could be adapted to serve as a digital green card with all immigrants required to register with regional Motor Vehicle Commission offices. The digital green card would be mandatory for official identification, residency documentation, school enrollment and employment verification.

Those registrants found to be here illegally, who are nuclear family members of native-born or naturalized American citizens, could be afforded a "reasonable grace period" to secure naturalization as part of an Earned Amnesty Program (EAP). Any felony, high misdemeanor or targeted misdemeanor activity conducted during this period would be grounds for deportation under immigration laws.

    Footing the bill

Illegal immigrants are bearing children in this country to secure their claims to citizenship, supporting them in substandard housing conditions, sending them to public schools, and availing themselves of health-care and public assistance benefits, while middle-class taxpayers are footing the bill.

"Bad actors" who thrive in this underground economy are empowering their fellows to enter the country illegally and fuel the fires of violent criminal activity. Let's get a grip.

America cannot continue to support illegals and their anchor babies. We don't have the resources to replace our infrastructure as it is. We continue to send foreign aid to Mexico and nothing is done except the money going into the rich pockets of a corrupt society. If mexicans want to improve their lot they should stay in their country and fight for getting improve wages and benefits just as Americans have done for years.
