Experts: Gulf Cartel Attack on Zetas Likely

Experts: Gulf Cartel Attack on Zetas Likely
    Reported by: Will Ripley
    Last Update: 7:33 pm

TAMAULIPAS, Mexico -- CHANNEL 5 NEWS has learned the Gulf Cartel may be planning to attack the Zetas. Americans are advised to avoid traveling to Tamaulipas during this volatile time.

The Gulf Cartel currently controls Matamoros and Reynosa. The Zetas are in control of Nuevo Laredo. Experts say the Mexican highway connecting these cities, Highway 2, will likely be a flashpoint for violence in the coming weeks. The Gulf Cartel could be planning an attack to take back the city of Nuevo Laredo. The Zetas, meanwhile, are reportedly calling-in reinforcements and bracing for battle.

The US State Department's latest travel warning advises citizens of the United States to avoid Northern Tamaulipas and Highway 2.

The warning, issued July 11, says cartel members are using stolen trucks and SUVs to block the highways and keep the military out. Drivers have been targeted, carjacked, and robbed.

A tactical analyst for the STRATFOR Intelligence Agency in Austin discussed the potential danger. He says sources reported seeing a large convoy of Zetas entering Nuevo Laredo last week. He thinks the Zetas may be calling in backup to defend against an attack by the Gulf Cartel.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS agreed to hide the STRATFOR tactical analyst's identity for security reasons. "US citizens traveling to Mexico is quite a risk right now. The risk of collateral damage has definitely increased with the increase in conflict and violence among the cartels," the analyst said.

"Collateral damage means being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Essentially a firefight could break out at any point in time between two rival groups or a cartel and the military," the analyst said.

"The threat of spillover violence is very real especially in the South Texas border region," the analyst said. "We've seen a dramatic increase in home invasions, business invasions, and cross border kidnappings as well."

Rumors of spillover violence are spreading fast online. A blogger reported over the weekend that Zetas crossed the border near Laredo and attacked two ranches on the US side. Multiple law enforcement sources says those reports are "false."

Investigators found a mass grave near Monterrey, Mexico. They're working to identify 51 bodies. Experts say it'll take DNA testing to figure out if any of the victims are American.

Send the human right inspectors there. LOL

This is looking more like desperation everyday.

Shut this darn country down from the Miuslim extremists and bring our boys home now.

Mexico ain't stupid and if we have a drug war going on 8000 miles away, they win their drug war here.

Get all American youth on drugs and we can't win.
You cannot dedicate yourself to America unless you become in every
respect and with every purpose of your will thoroughly Americans. You
cannot become thoroughly Americans if you think of yourselves in groups. President Woodrow Wilson
