Close to 300 Arrested During Operation Desert Sky

More than 7,000 pounds of drugs discovered

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio calls this month long operation a major success. Deputies seized drugs, guns and arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants.

On Thursday afternoon, Arpaio's office showed off some of what they found during Operation Desert Sky.

Deputies displayed huge bails of marijuana wrapped in plastic. They discovered more than 7,000 pounds worth of drugs.

Deputies arrested close to 300 people, most suspected of being in the country illegally.

The operation featured Sheriff's posse members flying in small planes searching for smugglers in rural Maricopa County.

The air support helped deputies make some significant busts.

"You have so many people carrying marijuana on their back..so it's good for the air posse to fly over and report any suspicious activity to our ground deputies," said Arpaio.

While the operation targeting smugglers has wrapped up, Arpaio said he's planning a new illegal immigration sweep for next week. One that will focus on a west Phoenix market where an off-duty Buckeye police officer was shot and killed recently.

Thank god for Sheriff's like Arpaio. If his opponent had won the last election he would have turned a blind eye to this. There would be no sweeps through businesses to arrest identity thieves and those illegally working in the country and no traffic checks, allowing drunk illegal alien drivers to kill more Arizonans. Arpaio is the only one standing between law and order and utter lawlessness in Maricopa County and the Phoenix area because Phoenix still is a sanctuary city still run by a corrupt city council and corrupt Mayor Phil Gordon. We need to call Arpaio, thank him for symbolizing everything good about this country in the law and order category and try to persuade him to remain Sheriff where he can do the most good. God bless you Joe Arpaio and please stay safe. We are behind you 150 percent......

see if our border was secure as obama said in El paso...this drug bust wouldn't have happened.

Sheriff Joe has made it clear that he isn't going anywhere and will be running in the next election.

I'm wondering how these numbers compare with the amount of people and drugs crossing the 38th parallel?

Remember that other border that we really do have "Operational control" over?

Unfortunately two more border patrol agents lost their lives when they collided with a train this morning in Arizona while pursuing another group of illegal aliens who illegally crossed over our "secure border" as Obama proclaimed yesterday during another campaign photo op. The blood of these dead agents along with all other murdered border patrol agents and Americans living along the border and in the interior of the country is on Napolitano's hands during her miserably failed watch.
