SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local Coast Guard crew returned to Naval Base San Diego Monday with more than 14 tons of cocaine nabbed from seafaring narcotics smugglers.

The drug haul, seized in 18 busts, would have been worth an estimated $423 million in street sales, according to the federal maritime agency, which described the confiscations as a "significant blow to illicit trafficking."

Vice Adm. Charles Ray, Pacific-area commander of the Coast Guard, recognized the crew members' achievement with an award of merit following their homecoming.
