DEVELOPING: An 18-year-old Somali man was behind an attack involving a car and butcher knife on the campus of Ohio State University Monday that left nine injured, law enforcement sources told Fox News.

After the suspect plowed his vehicle into the crowd, officials said he got out of the vehicle and began attacking people with a butcher knife before he was shot and killed by a campus police officer.

The attacker, was a "legal permanent resident," according to an official with direct knowledge of the investigation.

The suspect's name was yet not released and the motive behind the attack is still unclear, according to law enforcement sources, but investigators are not ruling out anything at this point.

Ohio State Police Chief Craig Stone said the attacker purposely drove over a curb and into pedestrians.

"This was done on purpose," he said.

Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said police were looking into whether it was a terrorist attack.

Monica Moll, the school's public safety director, told reporters the attack took place in front of Watts Hall, the location of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, around 9:52 a.m.
A campus officer nearby engaged the suspect, who was attacking people with a butcher knife, and shot and killed him within minutes.

"The threat ended when the officer shot the suspect," she told reporters.

Moll said that "injuries were minimized," due to the rapid reaction of campus police.

Ohio State University said in a statement the injuries included stab wounds, and being struck by a vehicle. There were also other injuries that were being evaluated.

Jerry Kovacich, a third-year in welding engineering, told the school's newspaper, The Lantern, that he witnessed a man in a car try to drive into a crowd of people after a fire alarm went off. After the car crashed, Kovacich told the newspaper he witnessed the man then attack bystanders with a knife.

“I didn’t see anything with the shooter, what happened was it was outside of MacQuigg Lab,” Kovacich told The Lantern. “The guy ended up just coming and hopping the curb with his car and trying to mow down a couple people. He lost control, and I think he ended up hitting three people, and then people were around the car.

Somebody asked him if he was OK and the guy just hopped out of the car with a butcher knife and starting chasing people around.”

There continues to be a massive law enforcement presence on campus, including a SWAT team and officers with long guns. Police also blocked off roads around the perimeter of the campus, clogging area traffic. Classes were canceled for the rest of the day.

The school initially sent out a campuswide alert at 9:56 a.m. local time which read, "Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College."

Campus police tweeted the same alert, and wrote in another tweet, “Continue to shelter in place. Avoid area of College.”

By 11:30 a.m., the school announced the shelter in place was lifted, and the "scene is now secure." All classes were canceled on the Columbus campus for the remainder of Monday.

Authorities said later that it doesn't appear that the suspect used a gun in the attack.

Authorities initially believed there were multiple attackers, with one possibly hiding in a parking garage, but later said at a news conference they believe there was only one suspect.

One student who spoke to WBNS from her hiding place in a restroom said the situation was frightening.
“I’m a little shaken up at first,” Cydney Ireland told the station. "I do feel safe based off the room I’m in.




“It’s absolutely surreal,” she said.
Rachel LeMaster, who works in the engineering college, told The Associated Press a fire alarm sounded before the attack.

"There were several moments of chaos," she said. "We barricaded ourselves like we're supposed to since it was right outside our door and just hunkered down."

LeMaster said she and others were eventually led outside the building and she saw a body on the ground.

Fox News contributor Rod Wheeler, a former Washington DC homicide detective and an OSU alum, said the school's police department is highly trained.

"People don’t need to panic,” he said, adding that those in hiding should stay put and switch their cell phones to vibrate.

A law enforcement officials tells Fox News that the FBI Columbus Field Office SWAT team has been activated, and is deploying to the campus to assist local authorities with the reported active shooting.

The ATF Columbus Field Division agents are also responding to the scene, the agency tweeted.

The sprawling, 58,000-student main campus in downtown Columbus is one of the nation's largest.

Ali Muhammad has been identified as the suspect who allegedly launched a car and knife attack on the Ohio State University campus on Monday, leaving nine people injured.

The attack took place at 9:52 a.m., when police say the suspect plowed into pedestrians with a car and then exited with a butcher knife, stabbing several people, ABC News reported.

The suspect, who was killed by police during the attack, was identified hours after the attack took place. Reports indicate that Muhammad drove a car into a group of students who had left a school building following a fire drill, but it was not reported whether the suspect was responsible for triggering the alarm.

There were initially rumors that more suspects may have been involved in the OSU attack, but authorities later said Ali Muhammad was the only suspect.

Journalist Lisa Daftari reported that Muhammad was 20-years-old and a Somali-American, but others identified the suspect as 19-years-old and a refugee.

NBC News reported that suspected Ohio State University attacker Ali Muhammad was actually 18-years-old, and was a Somali refugee and legal permanent resident of the United States. It was not immediately clear when he may have immigrated from Somalia to the United States or how long he had lived in America.

There were still other unanswered questions about OSU suspect Ali Muhammad, including whether he was a student at the university. Some reports noted that he lived near the campus, others called him a student.

As the Columbus Dispatch reported, the attack left several injured but there were no deaths reported outside of the alleged suspect, Ali Muhammad.
Students on the OSU campus described scenes of chaos, with police responding quickly and the university commanding students to run away, find a place to hide, or fight the suspect if they could not do either of these.

“I just had a class over here an hour ago,” Mike O’Connell, a senior at the college, told the Columbus Dispatch. “This is insane. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Witnesses said suspect Ali Muhammad crashed his car into the crowd, which some initially believed was an accident. It was then that the suspect exited the car with a large knife and chased people in the crowd in an attempt to stab them.

“Luckily there were so many people he couldn’t focus on one target,” student Jacob Bowers told ABC News.

“I didn’t see anyone get stabbed but I saw the police officer take down the stabber. He saved lives today.”

Bowers said Muhammad said nothing during the attack, “which was almost scarier,” he added.

The suspect was killed when he charged at police officers, witnesses said.

As NBC 4 in Columbus reported, victims from the Ohio State University attack had a variety of injuries caused both by the car and the suspect’s knife.

“Columbus fire officials tell NBC4 nine people were transported to local hospitals, and all nine victims have non-life-threatening injuries. The patients were split among OSU Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.

“Victims were hospitalized with injuries including stab wounds, injury by motor vehicle and other injuries that are being evaluated.”

The reports that the Ohio State University attack suspect was a Somali immigrant kicked up political controversy, especially in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s stance against Muslim immigration.

Though it was not clear if Ali Muhammad was a Muslim, most of those living in Somalia practice Islam.

Police have not yet discussed a potential motive for Ohio State University attack suspect Ali Muhammad, and have not said if they consider the attack to be an act of terrorism. Authorities did say they believe the attack was planned ahead of time.

A refugee from Somalia stabbed multiple people at Ohio State University on November 28. He has been named as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, 18. School authorities did not comment on terrorism connections but said that “this was done on purpose.”

OSU police tweeted before 10 a.m. “active shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College.” A subsequent tweet asked people to avoid the area around the school. While another said that the activity was centered around the “north campus area.”

Initial reports indicated that the attack was a “shooting.” Officials later said that the only shots fired were by police.There has been no official confirmation on Artan’s age only, some say he is 18 while others say he is 20.

One witness told CNN that Artan was “completely silent” during the stabbing. The witness said Artan “was very creepy.” The silence remained “even when he was shot.”

A witness told NBC Columbus’ Matt Edwards that “a fire alarm was pulled, people cleared Watts Hall, then a car came along and started hitting those who evacuated.” The Columbus Dispatch reports that the person in the car had a “large knife.” Officials later said that Artan got out of the car and began slashing students.

A witness, Jerry Kovacich, told the Ohio State Lantern about his experiences saying:

In total, eleven people were injured at the campus.

Only one of the injured was considered to be in critical condition, the rest are all stable. WSYX reporter Brooks Jarosz tweeted that six trauma surgeons have been requested at the school’s Wexner Medical Center. Four victims were received there, none with life-threatening injuries.

2. Artan Said in August 2015, ‘I’m a Muslim, It’s Not What the Media Portrays Me to Be

In the August 25 edition of the Ohio State Lantern, Artan was featured in the “Humans of Ohio State” feature. During his interview, Artan bemoaned the lack of pray facilities at OSU. He stresses in the piece that he needs to pray five times a day.

Artan adds, “I’m a Muslim, it’s not what the media portrays me to be. If people look at me, a Muslim praying, I don’t know what they’re going to think.” He concludes that he doesn’t blame people for judging him. “It’s the media that put that picture in their heads so they’re just going to have and it, it’s going to make them feel uncomfortable. I was kind of scared right now [of praying in public]. But I just did it. I relied on God. I went over to the corner and just prayed.”

3. Artan Was a Legal Resident of the United States

Ali was a student at Ohio State University and was a legal resident of the United States, reports NBC News. The network adds that Artan was a refugee from Somalia. According to NBC’s Pete Williams, Artan was admitted to the U.S. in 2014 having previously lived in Pakistan since 2007. He first lived in Dallas upon entering the United States.

In May 2016, Artan was listed as a graduate of the Columbus State Community College. He was a student of the school of arts and sciences. During his Humans of Ohio State piece, Artan complimented the prayer facilities at Columbus State Community College.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Artan lived on the West Side of the city.

Officials have not publicly revealed what the motive for the attack was. While Officer Horujko’s family are also refusing to comment until the investigation is over, according to 10TV reporter Kevin Landers.

The school was on lockdown for around two hours following the shooting. All classes were later canceled by school authorities. The school will return to normal on November 29.

NBC Columbus reporter Laura Borchers tweeted that there are both “marked and unmarked” police cars covering the area around Watts Hall. One student, Mike O’Connell, told the Columbus Dispatch, “I just had class over here an hour ago. This is insane. I’ve never seen anything like this.” The newspaper adds that Upper Arlington school have also gone into lockdown mode as a precaution. There are over 65,000 students enrolled at Ohio State University. Watts Hall,where the shooting was first reported, is the Material Science and Engineering building. There are three classrooms inside. After losing to OSU on November 26, the Michigan Athletics Twitter account tweeted, “Stay safe, Buckeyes.”
Speaking to NBC News, the president of the Somali Community Association of Ohio, Hassan Omar, said:

Every Somali person has been calling me, and everybody is crying. This is a shock. As a Somali community here, we are in a state of shock. In Columbus, we live in a very peaceful community.

This is gonna affect the life of everybody. We are American and we don’t want somebody to create this problem.
