Unclear if drug smuggling affected

TAMAULIPAS, MEXICO -Tamaulipas State Police dismantled communication towers used by the drug cartel, according to Tamaulipas Public Safety Division.

They destroyed communication towers in four border cities.

They also confiscated several devices, such as radios, used by the cartel.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned that state police dismantled 55 communication towers in Reynosa, Matamoros, Rio Bravo and Miguel Aleman.

Police said this is a significant blow to the drug cartel operating in those cities. The criminals used the tower’s radio frequencies to communicate with each other. They also used them to monitor the whereabouts and dealings of law enforcement.

Tamaulipas officials said they believe this will help put an end to the drug cartel’s surveillance network against federal and state police and the general public.

It is unclear if this operation will have a direct impact on drug smuggling activity in the Rio Grande Valley.

Meanwhile, a travel warning remains in effect in certain places of Mexico due to threats by certain groups.

The U.S. Department of State warned citizens about the risks of becoming victims of kidnappings, carjacking and robbery in various Mexico states.
