Congressmen want former Mexican governors extradited to U.S.

U.S. Representatives Filemon Vela and Michael McCaul have penned a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch seeking the extradition of former Mexican governors Tomas Yarrington and Eugenio Hernandez.

The two former governors from the Mexican state of Tamaulipas are accused of being the top players in “criminal enterprises that had a significant negative impact on communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border,” the letter states.

Yarrington is charged with conspiring to violate the provisions of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) statute. He is also charged with conspiracy to launder money, conspiracy to defraud, and conspiracy to make false statements to federally insured U.S. banks.

In addition, Yarrington is charged with a conspiracy to violate the provisions of the Controlled Substances Act, two substantive bank fraud charges, and a conspiracy to structure currency transactions at a domestic financial institution, while Cano is separately charged with three counts of bank fraud.
Hernandez is charged with conspiring to launder monetary instruments and aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business.

The letter states bringing Yarrington and Hernandez to justice in the United states “must be a priority” and that they urge the extradition of both men.
