Cook County,IL. an immigrant sanctuary at risk
Cook County, an immigrant sanctuary at risk
by Ana-Maria Udrica
March 02, 2011
Significant numbers of non-criminal immigrants are being arrested and deported from Illinois through a federal program designed to identify and remove convicted criminal aliens from the United States.
According to the most recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement statistics, 78 percent of immigrants arrested between November 2009 and October 2010 through Illinois’ Secure Communities program had no criminal convictions. Of those deported, 53 percent were not criminals.
The statistics are based on the 26 counties that participate in Secure Communities. Cook County is not one of them and, in the face of mounting pressure from ICE, immigration advocates who highlight the program’s failures are working to keep it that way.

WOW! This is great! I haven’t heard about this before. But to tell the truth I kind of thought there were less Latinos around when I was out in public and at the stores. I just wrote it off to being winter, for it’s every spring that they come out of the woodwork and the real population changes are evident. Maybe it’s more then just the cold winter this time? Lets hope, we’ll know for sure in about 4 to 6 weeks.

Immigration Agents Move Out Of Criminal Court Building
April 13, 2011 4:02 PM
CHICAGO (CBS) – Federal agents who track illegal immigrants are no longer working out of the Cook County Criminal Courts building where they were able to immediately check arrest records and begin deportations.
As CBS 2′s Suzanne Le Mignot reports, historically, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents have been reviewing the arrest reports of all incoming prisoners born outside the United States.
They were looking to see if a person was here illegally or had sufficient criminal convictions to warrant deportation. Mysteriously, the immigration agents were recently told to leave.
An ICE spokesperson issued a statement that said:
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) works closely with all law enforcement agencies – local, state, federal and international – to accomplish our common goals of combating crime and protecting public safety. On March 25, Cook County State’s Attorney officials notified ICE that we may no longer station ICE agents at the Cook County facility, located at 26th & California, to review county arrest records and identify criminal aliens. ICE and Cook County officials are discussing the issue to best accommodate our common goals and challenges.â€NO AMNESTY

Both of those articles are over a year old and Cook County is not listed as a participant. Having ICE in such a strategic area as Cook County's Courthouse was perfect. It was centralized being in the court house and walking distance to the largest county jail in the country. Where did ICE move to? I can't see where even the center of Chicago would be as beneficial. Are the sanctuary laws getting in the way of justice? It probably wouldn't be the first time.
