Cops: Illegal alien made knife threat

CROMWELL - A man who lost control of his temper Tuesday faces deportation as a result.

The man was arrested early Tuesday after he tried to attack another man with an oversized knife, police said. Once in custody, police said the suspect was revealed to be an illegal immigrant living here under a false name - actually, at least two phony names.

An additional check determined the man was wanted by federal immigration officials for deportation back to Honduras, police said.
The police became involved just before 8 a.m., when they got a call about an attempted assault following a verbal altercation, Sgt. Michael Wrenn said.

Capt. Roy A. Nelson said the altercation began at the Dairy Mart at 88 West St.

The men involved in the altercation left in separate cars, with the complainant traveling along New Lane with two co-workers. When he stopped at the stop sign at New and Main streets, Nelson said, the other man - who had followed the complaintant - got out of his car carrying an oversized knife.

He approached the complaint's car and "struck the driver's side window with the knife," police said. The complainant pulled into the driveway of the Cromwell Historical Society and fled on foot, pursued by the suspect.

The complainant outran the suspect and, in his frustration, Nelson said, the suspect slashed the tire of a Bobcat loader parked at the historical society.
The suspect left the scene, police said, but not before the complainant was
able to write down his license plate number and call police.

Using the license number supplied by the complainant, Nelson said, police were able to track down the suspect at a work site on Nook's Hill Road. There, he was taken into custody, and charged with criminal attempt to commit second-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief.

Police then began to unravel the mystery of the suspect's identity.
He first identified himself as Emar A. Rosales, 27, of Benton Street, Hartford. He produced a Honduran identity card at the time of his arrest, police said.

Following routine procedure, the arresting officers, David Ellison and Stephen Dorais, submitted the fingerprints taken from the suspect to a nation computer database. Within a short time, Nelson said, the FBI notified police the fingerprints had been identified as belonging to Aldo Javier Rosales, 24, a Honduran national.

At that point, Rosales was re-arrested and charged with criminal impersonation and forgery for having provided police with the false identity.

A further check of a separate computer database disclosed that Aldo Rosales was wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency on an outstanding warrant pending removal - deportation. ICE officials were notified Rosales was in the custody of Cromwell police, Nelson said.
But even further checking disclosed this was not Rosales' first involvement with Cromwell police. In 2004, he had been arrested and charged with fleeing the scene of an accident. At the time, he identified himself as Javier Varela, police said.

"The mug shot taken at that time matched Rosales," Nelson said. "That incident is still under investigation."

Rosales remained in the custody of Cromwell police late last night on a total of $50,000 bond on the various charges. He is scheduled to be presented this morning in Middlesex Superior Court.

Police say no one was injured in the original altercation, nor do they know what caused the incident. As of late last night, they had not found the knife Rosales allegedly used in the incident.
