Cops: Texas campus locked down after illegal-immigrant chase

KINGSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A truckload of suspected illegal immigrants fled when pulled over at a university Wednesday, forcing a lockdown of the school, officials said.

The truck driver, who was turned over to Border Patrol agents, said he had been forced at gunpoint to take the illegal immigrants to Kingsville, said Trooper Eric Hinojosa.

Texas A&M University at Kingsville said on its Web site that the chase near campus involved the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Border Patrol.

A DPS trooper stopped a vehicle for speeding, and about 12 people got out of the truck and fled, according to Trooper Eric Hinojosa.

"Everybody ran from the vehicle," DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange told The Associated Press.

No one was allowed leave campus after 3:30 p.m., and students and staff were advised to stay inside buildings.

A&M-Kingsville has enrollment of about 6,200 about 40 miles southwest of Corpus Christi.

Texas A&M-Kingsville campus lockdown ends

KINGSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A lockdown ended tonight at Texas A&M-Kingsville after a law enforcement chase of suspected illegal immigrants.

The lockdown lasted near three hours.

School spokeswoman Jill Scoggins said nobody was hurt. A message on the school's Web site said one person with a gun was taken into custody as well as several men who were unarmed.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports officers were seeking about a dozen suspected illegal immigrants who fled after a traffic stop near Kingsville.

A DPS trooper had stopped a pickup for speeding.

The truck driver says he was forced at gunpoint to transport the truckload of illegal immigrants to Kingsville. The driver was turned over to Border Patrol agents.

Campus activities were canceled Wednesday night, but the school would return to its regular schedule Thursday.

School president Rumaldo Juarez told The Associated Press that the safety of students, faculty and staff was the utmost concern.

The school has an emergency e-mail alert and voice messaging system.

A&M-Kingsville has enrollment of about 6,200 and 1,100 faculty and staff, on a campus located 40 miles southwest of Corpus Christi.
