The motorist in Indiana who is accused of killing a Colts linebacker and another man while driving under the influence, is a Mexican immigrant facing deportation.

According to the police, the driver, Alex Gonsales, drove onto the emergency shoulder of I-70 at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, and slammed into a ride-share vehicle. The impact of the collision killed Colts LB Edwin Jackson and 54-year old Jeffrey Monroe.

Gonsales was arrested and later booked at Marion County Jail. The booking documents show that Gonsales is a Mexican immigrant who is susceptible to deportation.

Though, the booking documents do not make clear whether Gonsales is in the U.S. illegally. However, even if Gonsales’ status is legal, such as with a legal permanent resident status, he still would be subject to deportation if convicted of a felonious/serious criminal act.

According to Sgt. John Perrine of the Indiana State Police, “It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license. He was transported to the Marion County Jail, the result of the test for intoxication is pending.”

Police reports state that Gonsales tried to flee the scene, had no license, and had a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Mr. Monroe was on the scene, because he pulled over to assist Mr. Jackson.

Mexican immigrant without license accused in DUI death of Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson

Authorities try to deport Alex Cabrera Gonsales

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson, 26, was one of two men killed when a suspected drunken driver struck them as they stood outside their car along a highway in Indianapolis. The Colts said in a statement Sunday, Feb. 4, 3018, ... more >

By Victor Morton - The Washington Times - Sunday, February 4, 2018

The man accused of killing an NFL player and another man in a DUI-related crash Sunday morning is a Mexican immigrant whom authorities are trying to deport, according to charging documents.

Police say 37-year-old Alex Cabrera Gonsales drove a black Ford F-150 pickup truck onto the emergency shoulder along Interstate 70 around 4 a.m. Sunday, plowed into a ride-share vehicle, and killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe of Avon.

Booking documents from the Marion County Jail, which can be searched for at http://inmateinfo.indy.gov/IML and found at case number 1804804, show that Mr. Cabrera Gonsales is an immigrant from Mexico who is subject to deportation.

Mr. Cabrera Gonsales didn’t have a driver’s license, tried to flee the scene of the accident and had a blood-alcohol level of at least .15 (nearly twice the legal limit), authorities said.

The booking document, which specifies that Mr. Cabrera Gonsales has a detainer request on him, does not say whether was in the U.S. illegally or as a legal permanent resident who can still be deported for a serious crime.

“It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license,” Sgt. John Perrine of the Indiana State Police
said in a statement. “He was transported to the Marion County Jail, the result of the test for intoxication is pending.”

Police believe, according to reports first cited in the Indianapolis Star, that Mr. Monroe had pulled over to assist an ill Mr. Jackson.

Mr. Jackson, nicknamed “Pound Cake,” played for the Colts for the past two seasons, winning his roster spot after signing onto the practice squad. His 2017 year was shortened by injury.

Edwin Jackson always brought a smile to our locker room and the community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will miss him greatly,” the Colts tweeted on their official account.

The account also retweeted numerous players and coaches and members of the Indianapolis community expressing shock and giving praise to Mr. Jackson.
Although he played football in high school in Atlanta and was also a state-finalist wrestler, Mr. Jackson did not get a football scholarship and first made it onto the football team at Georgia Southern University as a walk-on player.

OMG, this is so sad! I had heard the hit and run driver was likely drunk. Should have known he was also likely illegal!! I know we have drunk American citizen drivers who do stupid stuff, but we do NOT need additional stupid drivers who are not even here legally!!

They all think they are above the law now.

Each and every illegal alien needs to be deported and that includes DACA!

DACA is illegal and they should not get a free pass to stay. Let work permits expire and they MUST leave our country and get in line like everybody else. They are not a "special" group of people over all others!

Trump can’t ignore new details about man who allegedly killed NFL player

    By Bryan Chai
    February 5, 2018 at 1:07pm

Regardless of one’s feelings about President Donald Trump, he has made his agenda very clear.

It primarily boils down to two major points: fixing the economy and securing the nation’s borders.

The second point has drawn some of the sharpest criticism levied at Trump, with many decreeing his actions as racist and xenophobic.

In fairness, as is often quoted, a nation without borders is no nation at all.
That being said, another issue Trump has recently taken up has been with the NFL.

Trump has crusaded against the NFL and its players who have decided to kneel during the anthem.
That has drawn tremendous backlash from the NFL, with players, coaches and owners rebuking the president’s narrative.
Despite that, Trump still found time to congratulate the Philadelphia Eagles on a Super Bowl win.

But now, Trump’s national security directive and his budding feud with the NFL have come to an interesting intersection.
The NFL fraternity mourned the loss of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson, 26, who was one of two men struck and killed by a drunk driver on Sunday.

Jackson and his Uber driver, Jeffrey Monroe, pulled over to the side of the highway because Jackson will getting sick. That’s when a black Ford pickup truck collided with the two men.
The man who was allegedly driving the pickup was caught after initially trying to flee on foot. He gave the police an alias name, Alex Cabrera Gonsales.

The driver’s real name turned out to be Manuel Orrego-Savala. He is an illegal alien from Guatemala.

“Orrego-Savala is in the United States illegally and has previously been deported on two occasions, in 2007 and again in 2009,” Sgt. John Perrine said in a statement via the Indianapolis Star. “State police investigators are working with U.S. Federal Immigration Officials and they have placed a hold on Orrego-Savala.”

Orrego-Savala drew the ire of Rep. Todd Rokita of Indiana.

Orrego-Savala is currently being held in the Marion County jail.
While Trump has not commented on the incident, it will be fascinating to see if he does. By all accounts, Jackson was a beloved teammate who was even nicknamed “Pound Cake” by his peers.
If Trump and the NFL were to ever find common ground on a controversial topic, it seems far more likely that it’ll involve Jackson’s death than anyone kneeling for the anthem.

Suspect in Colts' Edwin Jackson, Uber driver deaths had a 0.239 percent blood-alcohol level, court documents say

The man suspected of driving drunk and fatally striking an Indianapolis Colts player and his Uber driver early Sunday had twice been deported and was in the country illegally, police confirmed Monday.

Police say Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit when he hit and killed Edwin Jackson, a 26-year-old Colts linebacker, and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, Jackson's Uber driver, around 4 a.m. Sunday.

Orrego-Savala is from Guatemala, according to Indiana State Police. The circumstances of his deportations in 2007 and 2009 and any previous arrests were unclear Monday afternoon. Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued no statement and did not answer questions.

But the circumstances of his arrest emerged as the latest case to draw in politicians and activists, particularly as President Donald Trump and Congress debate immigration changes as another budget deadline looms this week.

"I agree with current law that punishes people who do not follow the law," said Ana Kotchkoski, president of the Venezuelan Association of Indiana, which regularly lobbies on behalf of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients. "This goes against everything were trying to fight for and pursue for DACA."

In 2012, President Barack Obama created DACA through an executive order. The program allowed certain people who came to the U.S. illegally as minors to be protected from immediate deportation. The program has become a bargaining chip for Democrats, as President Trump and Congressional Republicans seek a budget deal to fund the construction of a wall on the southern border.
Meanwhile, supporters of the wall — and, more broadly, tougher immigration laws — pointed to the deaths of Jackson and Monroe as a reason for stricter border security.

“Their lives were taken by a twice-deported illegal immigrant who was not only two times the legal limit to drive, but attempted to flee the scene of the crime in a cowardly fashion," said Michael Joyce, Indiana communications director for the Republican National Committee, in a statement. "These horrific events only further underscore the need for immigration reform and stronger border security measures that can further prevent these tragedies from happening in the future.”

According to the state police, the crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday along the westbound lanes of I-70, just west of Holt Road.

Jackson and Monroe, of Avon, were standing near Monroe's stopped vehicle when Orrego-Savala's Ford F-150 pick-up truck drove onto the emergency shoulder and struck them both.
Investigators believe Monroe pulled to the side of the road when Jackson became ill, and that Monroe got out of his car to assist Jackson.

Orrego-Savala tried to run away but was arrested soon after on the ramp to Holt Road, police said. He used the fake name of Alex Cabrera Gonsales, police said.

One of the two victims was thrown into the center lane of I-70 during the crash, ISP Sgt. John Perrine said in a statement. A state trooper, who spotted the crash along the right side of the road, struck the body of a victim in the center lane, Perrine said. Police did not say which victim was struck.

Manuel Orrego-Savala's blood-alcohol level was .239 percent, according to a preliminary probable cause affidavit filed in Marion Superior Court. In Indiana, a driver is presumed intoxicated at 0.08 percent.

Indiana advocates for the rights of the undocumented sought to separate the issue of drunken driving from illegal immigration.

"The tragedy here is that this young man lost his life due to the negligence of someone who decided to drive under the influence," said Francine Dash, a spokeswoman for Faith in Indiana. "Legal status is not the culprit here; drunk driving is."

“There are no excuses to drink and drive," said Marlene Dotson, president and CEO of the Indiana Latino Institute. "It impacts the entire community."

More than 10,000 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That represented one-third of all traffic deaths in the United States.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not return calls by IndyStar. Much of Orrego-Savala's background, including how much time he spent in Guatemala, is unknown at this point.
Immigration to the U.S. from the Northern Triangle — Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — grew by 25 percent over the eight-year period from 2005 to 2017, according to the Pew Research Center.

Although violence tends to be the oft-cited cause for immigration from these three countries, Guatemala saw a slight decrease in violence in 2017, according to InSight Crime, a foundation studying organized crime in Central America.

However, poverty runs rampant in Guatemala. In 2014, the year for which data is most recently available, more than a quarter of the country’s population lives on roughly $3 a day, according to the World Bank. Only the top 10 percent of the country’s population is considered middle class or wealthy.

Orrego-Savala has not been formally charged by the Marion County prosecutor's office. Prosecutors were granted a continuance, moving his initial hearing to Wednesday morning, according to the office.

He's being held in Marion County Jail. State police are working with federal immigration officials, Perrine said.

The sports world in Indianapolis came to a halt on what should have been the happiest day of the year for the NFL.

The news of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson's death marred the festivities leading up to Super Bowl LII.

Here's everything you need to know.

    What happened to Edwin Jackson?

Police believe Jackson, 26, became ill and his Uber driver, Jeffrey Monroe, 54, Avon, was helping on the side of the road of Interstate 70 when a black Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Alex Cabrera Gonsales, 37, Indianapolis, struck them both.

Police said one the victims was thrown into the center lane and was struck by an officer responding to the crash.

Gonasales attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended on the ramp to Holt Road, according to police.

"It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license," Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said in a statement. "He was transported to the Marion County Jail, the result of the test for intoxication is pending."

Police learned Gonsales was an alias for a Manuel Orrego-Savala, a citizen of Guatemala who was in the United States illegally. Police say Orrego-Savala had been previously deported twice, in 2007 and 2009.

According to documents, Orrego-Savala had a blood-alcohol content of three times the legal limit.

How did the Colts acquire Edwin Jackson?

Jackson began his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015, according to pro-football-reference.com. After being cut by Arizona on Sept. 1, 2015, the Colts added Jackson to the practice squad on Dec. 8, 2015. Jackson signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts on Jan. 5, 2016.

    What were Edwin Jackson's stats?

Jackson did not play any games in 2015. He played one season with the Colts, starting 8 of 16 games in 2016. He finished the season with 47 tackles, 19 assists and 2 sacks as the Colts' third-leading tackler on the season.

Jackson missed all of the 2017 season after a preseason injury landed him on injured reserve.

Where did Edwin Jackson play college football?

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Jackson was not recruited out of high school and joined the Georgia Southern Eagles as walk-on.

He played 48 games and started 23 for for Georgia Southern, according to Colts.com. Jackson finished his college career with 121 tackles and 97 assists and was the team's leading tackler each of his last two seasons.

In 2013, Jackson was part of one of the program’s biggest wins — a 26-20 win against Florida.

What else do we know about Edwin Jackson?

Jackson was an Atlanta native, graduating from Westlake High School and was a three-year team captain in football, according to Colts.com. He was also a Georgia state champion in wrestling at 189 pounds. The 6-foot, 234-pound linebacker graduated Georgia Southern with a degree in international trade.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Jackson had 10 siblings and was the middle child at No. 6.
Jackson earned the name "Pound Cake" when he gave the Arizona Cardinals defensive staff his mother's famous Georgia Southern pound cakes at her suggestion. At practice, everyone was calling him "Pound Cake" and the nickname stuck even once he joined the Colts.

How did immigration activists respond to Jackson's death?

The man suspected of killing Jackson and an Uber driver is a Guatemalan citizen, is in the U.S. illegally and has been deported two times before. He also gave police the alias Alex Cabrera Gonsales after the early Sunday crash that killed Jackson and the Uber driver, but his real name is Manuel Orrego-Savala.

When the news about Orrego-Savala's immigration status spread, supporters of stricter border security called for harsher immigration laws and renewed their call to build a wall on the southern border. Supporters of reforms that would allow undocumented immigrants — and especially children — a path toward citizenship cautioned lawmakers not to conflate criminals with law-abiding children.
