Evangelist arrested for harbouring aliens

POLICE in Kilimanjaro Region are holding an evangelist of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) for allegedly harbouring illegal immigrants at his home.Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Godfrey Kamwela, said the suspect along with the aliens were arrested on Monday at around 7:15 pm at Vunjo in Moshi Rural District.

RPC Kamwela said the suspects were arrested by police on patrol who were tipped of about the presence of the four illegal immigrants and when they got to the house they found them hiding in the kitchen.

He mentioned the aliens as Atriku Takie (22), Hyelu Agosti (25), Daneze Daiso (30) and Dadaf Erotro (40), all from Ethiopia.

"They entered in the country on Monday through the Kenya-Tanzania border and went to the house of the evangelist Mbazi Manase (36) from Kyomo Chekereni," said the RPC.

After interrogations, it has been revealed that the suspects were on their way to South Africa through Malawi. They will be taken to court upon completion of investigations.

Meanwhile, MEDDY MULISA reports from Bukoba that Kagera Regional Immigration Officer (RIO), Mr George Kombe, told reporters yesterday that they have repatriated 63 aliens from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi.

Mr Kombe said 49 aliens from DRC were rounded up at Omurugamba border post on March 9, this year. The immigration department also netted 15 aliens believed to have entered the country from neighbouring Burundi.

The aliens including 12 males and three women were aged between 25 and 35 and were nabbed at Katoro village, in Bukoba Rural district on March 12, this year.

Mr Kombe further said on March 9, this year 49 illegal immigrants from DRC were nabbed at Kabanga border post in Ngara District.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Authority and Local Government), Mr Aggrey Mwanri, appealed to all Tanzanians to cooperate by reporting foreigners, some of whom have allegedly been elected to various posts including village chairpersons.
