ICE is right to focus deportation efforts on criminals

The federal agency in charge of immigration enforcement promises to target only the “worst of the worst” criminals

THE U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcementis wisely revising its approach, directing its resources to focus on deporting the “worst of the worst” criminals in the country illegally.

However, ICE faces an uphill battle convincing local law enforcement and the public of this change, instead of targeting anyone who entered or stayed in the United States without authorization. The old

practices prompted some pro-immigrant rights groups to call President Obama “deporter in chief.”

The new rules, known as the Priority Enforcement Program, establish which immigrants are the highest priorities for deportation. Among them are those who have committed serious crimes, are

considered terrorism threats or entered the country unlawfully after Jan. 1, 2014. The agency estimates those groups make up about 13 percent of immigrants in the country illegally.

ICE asks local law enforcement to notify the agency 48 hours before a convicted criminal is released.Previously, ICE asked local agencies to hold people for 48 hours after they were supposed to be

released if they had been charged or convicted of a crime. That created legal and civil liabilities for jails and prisons.

Under the old approach, thousands of people ICE considered low priority for enforcement were deported. Families and communities have been torn apart and immigrant communities lost trust in local law enforcement.

Many police departments, including those in Seattle and King County, prohibit officers from checking on immigration status during stops or arrests. The new policy focuses on people who have been

convicted, are in custody and whom ICE identified as high priority for deportation.

Some people argue that a person who has illegally entered or stayed in the United States should be deported under any circumstance. But the nation’s immigration system can’t work that way — it’s logistically impossible.

With only 6,000 agents nationwide, ICE has to prioritize whom it sends back to their home countries, said Timothy Robbins of ICE’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations while speaking at a

conference of state legislators in Seattle Tuesday.

He said he would prefer to deport one convicted sex offender in two weeks than send back 20 gardeners in one day.

    That makes sense.

ICE’s new approach can earn credibility, but the challenge will be in implementation.

In the absence of comprehensive immigration reform, federal and local law enforcement must employ policies that protect communities by deporting dangerous criminals.

That is not true. What is true is that the narcissistic hustler who sits in the White House cannot get enough of thumbing his nose at the American people. So he refuses to pressure states and cities to enforce our immigration laws. And he signals the rich in the Central American countries that the door is wide open for them to dump their poor people on us.

In this economy that is 20 jobs that a a legal citizen should have and the illegals drive the wages into the ground.

Then there is the issue of the illegals that come here to produce children on welfare. Last summer a part of the "surge" was 39,000.00 pregnant women that will suck off of medicaid and probably stay on welfare for life.

We have immigration laws that have to be enforced equally across the board because a gardener today could be a DUI tomorrow.

Which is precisely why we need to pass Trey Gowdy's bill or elect a President that understands the Constitution of the United States and acknowledge and authorize States Rights to enforce US immigration law which unleashes more than 800,000 state and local police officers who are equipped, trained, paid, sworn and ready to enforce US immigration law the same as they enforce all other federal laws that apply to their cities, counties, states and our nation of which they are a part.

Any illegal that comes into contact with law enforcement, for whatever reason, should be deported, period. Funding should not be an issue, not while we're giving billions to other countries. Cut back on the foreign handouts and take care of America!
