Counterpoint: Illegals have more rights than U.S. citizens

    Dean Burgess
    Eagle-Tribune

I'm a second-class citizen, at least I am according to the actions of some members of our congressional delegation and the government of the commonwealth.

As it stands right now, I have fewer rights than any illegal immigrant on American soil.

It seems some members of Congress and Gov. Deval Patrick will do anything they can to protect those who break our nation's laws, and even help them in the process. They seem far more concerned with the well-being of illegal immigrants than those of law-abiding, tax-paying citizens.

Please allow me to explain myself with the facts and not feelings.

I come from a family that has been in America for generations and immigrated here legally. I have never broken a single law and I have paid all of my taxes since I started working when I was 14 years old.

I pay for my health insurance and signed up with Selective Service when ordered to do so back in 1985.

Now a few years ago I voted (petitioned) to have my government reduce my state income tax rate to 5 percent. As we can plainly see, my own government didn't even respect me enough and chose to ignore my freedoms and liberties that are guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.

Now let's look at an illegal immigrant in America. They break the law right out of the gate by choosing to ignore our government's immigration laws and by failing to properly register. This provides them with the freedom not to pay taxes by working under the table and gives them the freedom to drive while unlicensed and uninsured.

Now, as if that weren't bad enough, here is the real atrocity that our government has committed. Our federal and state governments actually provide (paid for with taxpayer dollars) illegal immigrants with health care, SSI and welfare!

Now, why does my government choose to ignore a tax-paying,law-abiding citizen like myself, but choose to provide for the needs of someone else who does not follow its laws and fails to pay taxes to it?

Our federal government pays out over $10 billion each year to illegal immigrants and by 2010 Massachusetts will give about $1 billion each year to them as well.

Why am I being punished by my own government? Why doesn't my government protect me from those who break our nation's laws? Why doesn't my government protect its borders?

The truth is being an American isn't just about having a job or taking from other Americans. It should be about working for and becoming an American citizen because one loves freedom, liberty and democracy and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our country.

Illegal immigrants don't have to be loyal to America. American citizenship and the right to vote must be earned and not just given away. I hope one day not to be a second-class citizen anymore.

Seems to me I'm finding more articles than usual reflecting the above opinion whereas in the past there were more pro-illegal ones. It's been a hard road to travel if you're for law enforcement because the big biz groups, ACLU, Chamber of Commerce, various socialist groups, etc are obviously not on the same page as most American citizens. Perhaps it is wishful thinking on my part but it seems the tide may be turning. Let's hope so.
