TN: Tenn. lawmakers hoping to pass immigration reform
Tenn. lawmakers hoping to pass immigration reform
February 13, 2011
WMC-TV
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
State lawmakers concerned with illegal immigration are introducing everything from an Arizona-style enforcement bill to requirements that drivers license exams be conducted in English.
With Republican majorities in both the House and Senate, those measures have a very good chance yet of becoming state law. But Republicans are not yet united on what measures to pass and how first.
Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey recently expressed concern that immigration bills should not dominate the session.
Both he and Gov. Bill Haslam support the idea of a single, comprehensive bill for everything.
But Rep. Joe Carr, who heads a House task force on illegal immigration, said no one has consulted him yet on the idea.
He will file three bills this week.
They include an Arizona-style bill that would empower local law enforcement to question suspects on whether they are legally in the country.
