    Villaraigosa Opposes English as National Language

    Steve Marshall Reporting

    LOS ANGELES, CA (KNX) -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has come out against the idea of making English the official national language of the U.S. The proposal has been attached as an amendment to the federal immigration bill.

    Villagrigosa says if the measure is strictly enforced, it could result in creating communications problems between people who provide emergency services and those receiving them.

    The amendment states, "Unless specifically stated in applicable law, no person has a right, entitlement, or claim to have the government of the United States or any of its officials or representatives act, communicate, perform or provide services, or provide materials in any language other than English.''

    The mayor appeared on CNN's "Late Edition" with Wolf Blitzer, offering his support for most of the provisions of the immigration bill adopted last week by the U.S. Senate.

    "Well, what it means is you won't be able to communicate with people for badly needed services," said Villaraigosa. "They could be emergency services. They could be services for medical care.''

    He also took note of the fact that the Senate has made no provisions to assist immigrants in learning English.

    They didn't allocate money so people can learn English. I can tell you that, here in Los Angeles, there are lines, thousands of people waiting to learn English in our adult schools,'' he said.

    Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he doesn't believe the amendment would negate any current laws.

    Well a big BooHoo..... do it right, learn the language, study History, take the test, and become LEGAL, then you wont have to worry about any of this. And besides, then YOU will be able to pay for your own healthcare!! How hard is this to understand? This argument is getting on my last nerve...

    ==============================

    This works both ways, Villaraigosa. My folks can't understand the "nurses" at the rest home because the "nurses" aren't required to speak fluent English. The "nurses" are creating problems for the old people in nursing homes. Neither I nor my parents know what the "nurses" are trying to say, so we don't know if there's an emergency or if the medication is correct.

    ENGLISH AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE SHOULDN'T EVEN BE QUESTIONED. FOR OVER 200 YEARS IF WAS THE "OFFICIAL" LANGUAGE.

    Next they'll want to say that Old Glory isn't the official flag or the White House isn't the official site of the Executive Branch. Where does this insanity end?

    Since when should we concern ourselves with "services" to those who aren't CITIZENS - for which those services were devised in the first place?

    Antonio Vivalaraza also marched with the protestors during the big protest in March. How ironic he was marching with La Mecha Phoenix flags along side of him on both sides. He is a card carrying Mecha member and was even a Brown Hat during his college days. The funniest episode involving this guy was during the illegal rally he spoke and loudly proclaimed "We clean your toilets" in honor of this a local radio show encouraged listeners to send the mayor (new only) toilet brushes. He recieved over 1000!
