A man who says he is "educating the public" with homemade signs has a bright yellow message about immigration.

The painted billboard at the corner of Broussard Road and Hillcrest Drive measures 24 feet wide by 12 feet high. In large black letters it states: "No wonder unemployment is so high 36 million illegals are in the U.S. according to the 2010 Census..."

The sign, which contains almost 90 words in all capital letters on nine lines, says an average of 12 citizens are killed by "illegal aliens" each day, and that politicians should be held responsible.

"I think people are not educated enough to keep up with politics," said Monty McCormick, who erected the sign on his property.

The yellow color was intentionally picked for its "eye-catching" qualities, the 57-year-old real estate inspector said. The sign was fashioned in sections and sits close to the ground.

The manner in which McCormick has chosen to get his message out has caught the attention of more than just passersby.

The City of Beaumont will soon examine the size of the sign and decide whether it meets building codes and related regulations.

"You can't go putting up a huge sign in your front yard," said Steve Richardson, city planning manager. "We need to go out and look at it."
