Bill Backed On Tuition For Illegal Immigrants

By BILL LEUKHARDT, Courant Staff Writer Illegal immigrants living in Connecticut at least three years would qualify for in-state tuition at any state college under a bill approved Tuesday by the legislature's appropriations committee.

The bill - one of dozens considered by lawmakers in a marathon session - passed by a 44-6 vote. Supporters said the bill makes college more affordable to students whose noncitizen status makes them ineligible for federal aid, grants or other government assistance.

"It's a terrible thing if we don't encourage these kids," said Sen. Edith G. Prague, D-Columbia. She and others spoke of high school students they have met who are children of illegal aliens. They have been unable to afford state colleges because they can't afford the higher nonresident rates.

Opponents said the bill would give illegal aliens a benefit usually reserved for citizens and also would require money that now is not in the budget proposals of either Gov. M. Jodi Rell or the appropriations committee.

Can't the Governor "veto" that bill? If so then Jodi's on the hot seat and will show her true colors very quickly.

How about we just transport all of the countries illegals to Conneticut. Then we can sit back and watch the show.

They would never fit! There would be tooooo many of them!
