Is the New Haven where the mayor had identity cards offered for illegal aliens this year? If so I guess you get what you ask for..
Oh yeah, it's the same New Haven alright.

I say, turn the Vets loose to deal with this on their own - the problem would be solved quickly, once and for all.

    GRRRRR!

    'MS-13' vandals deface Vietnam memorial
Veterans angered by defacing attributed to violent Hispanic gang

Vandals claiming a relationship to the violent Hispanic street gang MS-13 defaced a Vietnam War memorial in Connecticut with graffiti, angering local veterans.
"Kill whites MS 13" were among the threatening words spray-painted on the Vietnam War Memorial at Long Wharf, Conn., reported WTNH-TV in New Haven.

"This irks me. This hurts me deep to my heart," Vietnam Army veteran Emery Linton Sr. told the station.

Linton, who served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1972, noted he lost friends there and called the mess on the memorial a slap in the face to veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

"People here respect these names. They gave their lives for everything, for the freedoms they have," Linton said.

Police are investigating whether the vandalism is the work of the violent MS-13 gang.

As WND reported, the El Salvador-based MS-13 operates in 44 U.S. states, according to the FBI.

WND reported as early as 1995 the gang reportedly was meeting with representatives of al-Qaida and smuggling operatives into the United States from Mexico.

An attorney prosecuting MS-13 members said the gang follows the "rape, kill and control" philosophy," using guns, knives and machetes. The group traffics in drugs, weapons and humans. Last summer, police in the Boston area conducted a major round-up of MS 13 members.

New Haven police told WTNH they have not documented any MS-13 activity in the city.

Another veteran said she was heartbroken over the vandalism.

"I don't know who would want to do this," Lori Grenfell told the New Haven station. "They have the right to say what they want to say. They can thank these guys for that right."

Linton had a message for the perpetrators.

"If it is a gang related thing, and if you guys really think you're bad, join the service, get in the action and see what it's really like," she said.

Members of the New Haven County Vietnam Veterans Group vowed to clean up the mess.

New Haven releases crime stats for 2007

New Haven (WTNH) _ The numbers are in and they show a mixed bag when it comes to crime in New Haven.

The numbers of murders has been almost cut in half and violent crime is down more than 9-percent while total crime is down seven percent.

But it's not all good news for the Elm City. Gun violence is on the rise by about 37-percent with the shooting victims getting older and the shooting suspects getting younger. All but four of the 162 shooting victims have been minorities.
(TRANSLATION: 158 SHOOTING VICTIMS ARE MINORITIES)

"Eighty percent of them are either a convicted felon or on parole or probation. We have reintroduced into the community this year some 1,260 people from the criminal justice system," said Mayor John DeStefano.

One thing not in the police department's report is the arrests for narcotics. State Police took over the disbanded narcotics unit back in April after the man in charge, Lt. William White, was arrested on federal corruption charges.

Working with New Haven officers in more than 900 investigations, State Police say more than 400 arrests have been made, 42 guns have been confiscated and about $1.5 million worth of illegal drugs have been taken off the streets.

"The numbers are going to be slightly lower than the have been in the past. Both of our arrests are made by police officers in the community who create a wedge between that buyer and the sellers interrupting drug trafficking at the street level," said Police Chief Francisco Ortiz.

And with 2007 behind them, the city is looking toward the future with new community initiatives, a new police chief and a new narcotics unit by summer's end.

Southington (WTNH) _ Police have charged a New Britain man with the shooting death of Southington man.

Police say a warrant has been issued charging 21-year-old Marcos Mercado of New Britain with murder, felony murder and robbery. Mercado has been in police custody since Sunday when he interfered with the execution of a search warrant at his New Britain home.

Officers found 41-year old Thomas Szadlowski's body in his Academy Street apartment last Wednesday after a co-worker asked police to check on him, concerned that he had missed work without an explanation.

Man charged with rape in human trafficking plot Human Smuggling

    Pascual Francisco

Milford (WTNH) _ A disturbing story out of Milford, where police have made a rape arrest and uncovered an illegal human smuggling plot.

It was Saturday morning around 9:30 when Guy Vitti walked from the repair bay at his Boston Post Road Gulf Station over to the front counter to discover a 12-year old girl.

"A young girl sitting there, eating candy she just purchased," Vitti said. "She was young, timid and scared."

When Vitti began asking questions, the girl took out a cell phone, made a call and passed the phone to him.

"He said he's her father and he'll be up here in a half hour to 40-minutes to pick her up. So that didn't sit well with me because she was awful young," Vitti said.

Instead, Vitti called police who discovered that the girl had walked nearly a mile from a motel near I-95. Police say she was running from 25-year old Pascual Francisco after he raped her.

"This individual, the girl, was being transported through the State of Connecticut," explained the state's attorney, Kevin Lawlor.

Francisco allegedly was smuggling the girl and others from El Salvador to Boston where she was to be delivered to her mother.

"This is the first case of this exact type I would say that we've had come through here with someone being brought through, allegedly brought through, illegally has been sexually assaulted like this," Lawlor said.

Francisco is charged with sexual assault, kidnapping, and unlawful restraint, among other charges.

At his arraignment today, Francisco's bond was increased from one million to two million dollars. He is due back in court on January 15.
