CT: Should Danbury partner with ICE?
Brace yourself, Patriots. This would be huge if it happens in the bastion of libidiot politics...ala Lieberman and Dodd. Danbury, CT is only 35 miles form the illegal alien haven of New Haven, CT! This would be a major thorn in New Haven's illegal alien hugging. And, Danbury, is only 57 miles from the Connecticut State Capitol, Hartford...another city with dismal immigration enforcement. Keep your fingers crossed that Danbury goes 287(g)

Should Danbury partner with ICE?
Cooperation with immigration officials appears set for approval
By Marietta Homayonpour
DANBURY — Should the city seek closer ties with federal immigration authorities?
That controversial question will likely be decided Thursday at the Common Council meeting.
With the mayor, the police chief and leaders in both major political parties on the Council supporting the move, a partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement appears set for approval.
Though the Council could decide to study the issue further, Mayor Mark Boughton doesn’t think that will happen.

If you have a moment, please fire off an e-mail to the common council members as encouragement to take the step to partner with ICE:

ICE partnership up for vote
All eyes on Danbury tonight as Common Council to decide whether police can work with immigration officials
By Eugene Driscoll STAFF WRITER

DANBURY -- Residents will speak tonight both for and against a proposal that would team police with agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The issue has support from both the Republican and Democratic leaders on the Council.
Jean Hislop, of a grass-roots Danbury group called Stop the Raids, said members will picket outside City Hall to show their displeasure with the proposal.
"People all over the state are eyeing Danbury right now and they are very concerned about this issue," Hislop said.
Elise Marciano, of a grass-roots Danbury group called U.S. Citizens for Immigration Law Enforcement, said she will speak in front of the Common Council to show support for the proposal. She said someone has to do something about illegal immigrants because the federal government will not.
"We have a lot of illegal aliens. It is wrong not to enforce laws. Once you do that you are starting down a slippery slope. And that is what is happening here. The federal government refuses to do anything," she said.
The Common Council is considering entering into an agreement that would see police and ICE agents "formalize a long-standing informal relationship," according to a letter on file from Danbury Police Chief Al Baker.
According to the letter, Danbury's participation with ICE would focus on crimes committed by illegal immigrants, including:
ä Gangs and organized crime
ä Drug smuggling
ä Human trafficking
ä Document fraud
ä Identity and benefit theft
ä Work-site investigation
While the city has not drafted a formal agreement with ICE, reports given to the Common Council say the ICE program would give certain Danbury police officers authorization -- after they receive training -- to "investigate, identify, apprehend, detain and process for ICE jurisdiction individuals who have violated civil or criminal immigration law."
That authorization would begin after the police officer came into contact with the person through a "lawful inquiry and arrest for violation of local or state law," according to a report from Danbury's deputy corporation counsel.
Among Hislop's concerns are that the ICE partnership will put legal immigrants at risk of being caught up in ICE raids and that it will hamper investigations into crimes committed against illegal immigrants, such as domestic abuse.
"This policy ends up being a detriment to the community as a whole. You have legal immigrants that are citizens, that are naturalized or are here with permanent legal status," Hislop said. "They are at risk of being detained and questioned and harassed."
Hislop said other city residents will speak during the Common Council meeting to convince elected officials to not support the proposal.
Danbury officials have said the ICE agreement will not result in wholesale roundups of illegal immigrants.
"Most of the people want the law enforced. I don't see this as a divisive thing. The Common Council realizes the police need the help," Marciano said.

01-03-2008, 06:35 PM #4First of all, you are not even questioned unless you are encountered for a law violation. If you're LEGALLY here you have nothing to be worried about. This kind of statement, as above, is just crap trying to throw a smoke screen for the violators - the illegal aliens."This policy ends up being a detriment to the community as a whole. Liberal OBL Bone Head Alert!
I just found this blog that is supposed to be reporting the meeting as it happens. Check out this post! Please leave a comment although mine hasn’t been posted yet, it may be typical liberal censorship.

Are the people that live in these community’s idiots or are they living behind 15 ft walls?I'm really really trying to understand why people care enough about something as arbitrary as citizenship to justify busting into people's homes in the middle of the night and harassing them.

Looks like they wimped out
10:00 P.M.: The meeting is over and the Common Council decided to form a committee of the whole to further look into the program.

01-04-2008, 11:08 AM #10I would call that a typical respose from wimpy, spineless, "don't want to offend the invader' policitians. Instead of standing up for the rule of law, they form a commission to take any responsibility off of them so the comission can issue a finding with some sort of spin such as "immigration enforcement is the domain of the federal government and communities should not be burdened with enforcing federal immigration laws. Enforcing federal laws in Danbury would not be fair to our residents."
