Cuomo cautions Democrats working with Trump: Use ‘extreme caution’

Gov. Cuomo on Sunday cautioned Democrats about working with President Trump on a bipartisan plan to fix the Obama-era program to shield young undocumented immigrants from deportation, saying it will ultimately resort in a wall on the Mexican border.

“I don’t like the starting point of this negotiation and I think the Democrats have to exercise extreme caution,” Cuomo told John Catsimatidis on the “Cats Roundtable” radio show on 970 AM on Sunday.

“Because basically the president will say to the Democrats: I will give you what you already have, which is DACA, and in exchange I want to get money for border security with Mexico, which will turn into a wall by the time he’s finished.”

Trump, spearheading a bipartisan approach for Congress to repair the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals and his tax reform proposals, broke bread with Congressional Democratic leaders Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at the White House last week.

The meeting led to Schumer getting caught on a hot mic saying, “He likes us. He likes me anyway,” about Trump.

On Sunday, he said the Democrats “are not going to obstruct for its own sake but we’re not going to come to an agreement for its own sake.”

“We’re going stick by our principles and if we can come to an agreement while sticking to our principles, that’s fine. Most Americans, the vast majority are for border security. They are against the wall. So are we,” Schumer said.

Cuomo said he’s not convinced Trump turn to bipartisanship is a good bet for Democrats.

“Any transaction has both the opportunity to do well and the possibility of peril,” he said, especially when dealing with Trump.

“I guarantee you where this winds up,” he told Catsimatidis.

Cuomo said Trump will make changes to his proposal for the border wall — a top priority for his presidential campaign — by adding cameras, sensors and an electric grid to thwart illegal immigrants from entering the country.

“Then the president will say, ‘I have a side little wall, better than the wall that we were talking about, better than a fence. This is a new electronic, highly sophisticated fence. A fence for 2020.’ That’s where it will come out,” he said.

He also said Trump sent DACA to Congress and knew what would happen next.

The president ordered an end to the program, created in 2012 by President Obama under an executive order, but gave Congress six months to come up with a solution.

“All the signs were that Congress was going to pass it anyway. … because there would be anarchy and it would be the ultimate injustice if they didn’t.

You’re talking about 800,000 young people across the country — they’ done absolutely nothing wrong,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo should go to Mexico and try that story as an illegal immigrant and see what happens to him there. Mexico has immigration laws and they enforce them.
