DACA deportation reversed after Soros, Bloomberg groups pressure

A rare Obama-era decision to withdraw DACA protections to an illegal who had become a serial immigration protest leader was reversed under pressure from groups backed by Michael Bloomberg and George Soros, according to Customs and Immigration Service emails.
After declaring Nadia Sol Ireri Unzueta Carrasco unfit to keep her protections from deportation because of "public safety concerns," groups backed by Soros and Bloomberg, along with her supporters at the University of Illinois at Chicago, won a reversal, allowing her to stay in the U.S. under President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
The emails, received under a Freedom of Information Act request by Immigration Reform Law Institute, showed that Customs and Immigrations Service officials met on the case with leaders from Bloomberg-backed National Partnership for New Americans and Soros-backed CASA de Maryland.
They also showed that some top-level insiders advocated for reversal by the agency, while others had concerns.
During the Obama administration, DACA renewals for so-called "Dreamers" were standard. And in the rare cases where DACA protections were cut, setting the illegal immigrant up for deportation, there was no appeal process.
By making an exception for Unzueta Carrasco, who sued to keep her status, officials worried about the "broader implications," and one even expressed shock that an appeal was being allowed.
"Gee, this is a surprise," wrote Natalie S. Tynan, a policy official inside Customs and Immigration after the agency's decision to let Unzueta Carrasco keep her DACA status. Citing a Progress Illinois newsletter story on the move, she added, "Another article claims that we reversed the initial decision so now it sounds like we have appeals process."
The emails revealed an internal battle over renewing DACA protections to recipients who had troubled backgrounds.
Unzueta Carrasco worked for Chicago-based Organized Communities Against Deportations. She is Mexican and claims to have arrived in the U.S. at age six. She was granted a two-year DACA protection in 2013. Standard renewal was rejected in 2015.
Unzueta Carrasco had been cited for several civil disobedience actions between 2009 and 2013.
In a statement published by Progress Illinois, the Chicago immigration activists suggested that she was being targeted. "When I first got the letter of denial two years ago, it said that the decision could not be appealed, like all DACA denial letters do. When USCIS e-mailed us, they said the decision had been reviewed and that it was not a mistake. When we filed the lawsuit, USCIS insisted that it was within their right to deny my DACA. As members of communities whose lives are so often in the hands of powerful government institutions like USCIS, this victory teaches us that organizing works," she said.
Advocates for tighter control on immigration said the decision sends a signal to illegals that there are many ways around the law.
Dale Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of the Immigration Reform Law Institute, for example, told Secrets that "This of course sends the signal to activist groups that if they press the agency hard enough they can get bureaucratic decisions reversed. It also signals that it's fine for illegal alien activists to engage in civil disobedience. Shrill politics shouldn't be condoned."
