Border Patrol and Department of Defense Join Forces

Training opportunity provides additional resources

Tucson, Ariz. – Joint Task Force (JTF)-North will deploy military resources in support of the U.S. Border Patrol starting mid-February to support border security efforts along the border in Arizona and New Mexico.

Communities in southern Arizona and southern New Mexico should expect to see additional military personnel, vehicles and equipment traveling throughout the border region in the near future.

JTF-North, based at Fort Bliss, Texas, is the U.S. Northern Command element responsible for coordinating and managing military homeland security support provided to the nation’s federal law enforcement agencies for the interdiction of suspected counterdrug and transnational threats within and along the approaches to the continental United States. The military personnel executing these missions operate strictly in a support capacity; they are not employed in a law enforcement role.

Ongoing collaboration between Customs and Border Protection and JTF-North continues to support the CBP mission while providing training opportunities for military personnel. By detecting border incursions and providing intelligence to Border Patrol agents, JTF-North will enhance the Border Patrol’s ability to counter threats along the border. Homeland security support missions provide volunteer military units with valuable training opportunities directly related to their military duties. Other JTF-North operations presently supporting CBP include the construction of all-weather access roads along the Southwest border. JTF-North has been providing military support to the nation’s federal law enforcement agencies since 1989.
