David Bozell: 'Establishment' GOP Shouldn't Fund Obama's Amnesty Plan
Tuesday, 02 Dec 2014 06:20 PM
By Bill Hoffmann
House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers is helping President Barack Obama implement his executive amnesty for illegal immigrants because the Kentucky Republican is "afraid of his own shadow," says David Bozell, executive director of ForAmerica.
"He's afraid of his own shadow, much like a lot of establishment Republicans are," Bozell said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"Just a few hours ago when Speaker [John] Boehner had his weekly press conference, he said the executive amnesty order was, and I'm quoting the speaker of the House here, 'a serious threat to our Constitution.'
"Well, if that's the case, then why are they entertaining funding it? I don't care if it's a short-term budget deal or a long-term budget deal. That is irrelevant to me," Bozell said.
Bozell, whose conservative group advocates a strong national defense and opposes big government, said GOP candidates in the midterms ran "countless thousands of television ads" promising to stop Obama's executive amnesty order "dead in its tracks."
"That's what they all campaigned on, and they have a moral obligation, frankly, to live up to the promises that they made during this campaign season," he said.
"I have no interest in watching Republicans fund Obama's agenda. That's not why they're there. If they do it, they own it just as much as he does and frankly the American people probably would have put Democrats in there if they wanted this stuff funded.
"They don't want their taxpayer resources being used to reward lawlessness, to be used to reward illegal activity. They expect their congressmen and women to be good stewards of their taxpayer resources and to defend the Constitution. If they're not going to do it, guys like Hal Rogers are just frankly useless to the American system of government."
At a House Republican Conference meeting, Rogers is said to have attempted to sell fellow lawmakers on a plan to immediately fully fund the federal government, including Obama's amnesty plan.
He would then have Congress pass a separate bill to rescind those funds next year. Bozell said Rogers is "dangerous" to the conservative agenda.
"Guys like Hal Rogers want to take the opportunity away from the new class, fund Obama's agenda … for an entire year, thereby prohibiting the Sen. [Joni] Ernsts and Sen. [Tom] Cottons and Sen. [Cory] Gardners from making their voice heard, being able to come through on their promises," he said.
"Guys like Hal Rogers are dangerous to the conservative agenda, for sure."
