Dallas suburb highest in USA for deportation arrests

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that a record number of phone calls started pouring in supporting deportation of illegals at Irving City Hall on Thursday morning.

The Dallas suburb of Irving was home to a crowd of more than 1,000 people at a protest rally Wednesday night to call for an end to a program that turns over arrested illegal immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

But most callers to city hall were voicing their support for stepped-up deportation efforts.

"It was ringing over and over, and by far, the biggest percent was in favor," City Secretary Janice Carroll said Thursday afternoon.

Irving police enacted the 24/7 Criminal Alien Program last year.

Facilitating around-the-clock communication with federal authorities and is designed to detain illegal immigrants who have been accused of a crime. This program is the latest tool being used by local governments in the absence of a federal overhaul or enforcement of existing immigration laws.

So far, Irving police have turned over more than 1,600 people to immigration officials.

The Dallas Morning News writes that Mayor Herbert Gears estimates that about 300 people in Irving are being turned over each month – more than in any other city in the nation.

He said city officials are obligated to uphold the law and will continue to use the program, which is available to any city that wishes to participate.

"Of the 200 e-mails I've read so far, one is negative and all the rest are positive," Mr. Gears said Thursday afternoon. "People are very overwhelmingly supporting what we are doing."

Two supporters of the program were arrested Wednesday night after being accused of assaulting Hispanics in the crowd. Police said Teresa Williams, 61, was charged with assault and failure to identify herself, both Class C misdemeanors. She posted a $728 bond and was released.

"I think as an American citizen, I have no rights whatsoever," she said as she was being arrested at the rally. She could not be reached by The Dallas Morning News for further comment.

    Way to go Irving!!!

This is an example of a town which has found a program and system that works, and works well.

If the illegals and their advocates don't like it, that's just too damned bad.

PULLING DOUBLE DUTY ON IMMIGRATION AND CRIME

What if communities could find an effective, legal way to remove illegal immigrants and reduce crime at the same time? And what if communities could do this without significant investments of money and manpower and without compromising the image of the city or the morale of its residents, visitors and businesses?

The city of Irving has done just that with its 24/7 Criminal Alien Program, created in September 2006 with Immigration and Customs Enforcement:

Irving detention officers worked with ICE agents, who made daily visits to the jail to interview suspected criminal aliens; those identified as illegal were immediately removed for deportation.
Irving began removing criminal aliens at the rate of 50 or more a month -- a huge increase over the four per month identified prior to the partnership.
But efficient process changes have allowed the program to become even more successful, says Irving Mayor Herbert Gears:

Irving detention officers have begun completing the initial screening process and setting up telephone interviews between suspects and ICE officials.
With this simple yet effective process change, Irving was able to determine the residency status of every prisoner 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This transformed a successful program into a round-the-clock initiative with even greater returns; Irving now identifies and removes more than 130 illegal immigrants a month -- a 250 percent increase over 2006.
What is unique about this program is that it operates within current laws and utilizes existing resources -- without costing additional money, time or staffing resources, says Gears. And it allows the city and Police Department to play an active role in the enforcement of immigration laws.

Does this attitude from May 2006 explain the reaction with the September law???
