GUATEMALA CITY (NBC) — Authorities in Guatemala captured an alleged leader of the Zetas drug cartel.

Gabriel Valverde, known as “Comandante Verde,” was arrested Sunday in the Alta Verapaz region of Guatemala.

The Zetas took control of much of the region in December 2010, and it has become notorious for drug-related crime.

Valverde was allegedly one of the masterminds behind the slaughter of 27 peasant farmers in Guatemala’s border region of Peten in May of 2011.

The massacre was believed to have been part of a revenge attack by the Zetas against rival drug traffickers.

Guatemalan police said Valverde had been a wanted man since May 2012.
