Immigration officials say 1 sister can stay, but other can't

TUCSON, Ariz. A Tucson family is agonizing over what they feel was bungling by immigration officials.

The case involves two sisters; one 18 and the other 23, who went to live with their grandparents after their mother died in 1988.

Three years ago, the 23-year-old received her permanent residence documents.

But the younger sister, Sarah Huacuja (wah-KHOO'-hah), recently learned she isn't eligible for U-S legal status.

The reason? She never was legally adopted by her grandparents.

Neither was her sister, and the government now says that she was granted permanent residency in error.

As for Sarah? Well, she had planned to attend the U-of-A after graduating with honors from Rincon High School in May. But she says that's now out because she won't be able to obtain financial aid.

The family, meanwhile, hopes that the government will exercise its discretion and let the older sister keep her residency while allowing Sarah to stay in the country in "deferred status.

I'm sure there are many fine institutions in your home country you can attend.

If neither are eligible, then neither should stay.
I don't care what you call me, so long as you call me AMERICAN.
