Democrat and Republican criticize government for detaining Chinese Muslims
Associated Press - June 4, 2008 9:23 PM ET
CAPITOL HILL (AP) - A California Republican and a Massachusetts Democrat say the government should apologize to Chinese Muslims who have been held at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher and Bill Delahunt also say the Chinese detainees should be freed and compensated and allowed to live in the U.S.
The members of the small ethnic group called the Vighurs fled China and settled in Afghanistan and Pakistan before they were swept up in the U.S.-led dragnet after the September 11 attacks.
During a committee hearing today, a Justice Department official testified that Chinese government interrogators were allowed to question the men, prompting criticism by the lawmakers.
